ButtheGrimmsneededmoney.Theyhadmadeabaddealwiththeirpublisherandreceivedlittlepaymentfortheirfirstbook.AtonepointWilhelmcomplainedtherewasn’tachairinhishouseonecouldsitonwithoutworryingitwouldbreak.Sohetookthehintandsettoworktomakeabookthatwouldbesuitableforchildren.Heselectedafewofthetales,madethemmuchlonger,andpolishedupthelanguage.Hedidn’taddmorals,buthedidslipincharacterjudgmentsandmoralizingcommentswhereverhecould.

TheGrimms’fairytalesalsohaveonecharacteristicthatwouldseemtomakethemunsuitableforchildren.Manyofthemincludeviolentincidents.In“HanselandGretel”anoldwomanisburnedtodeathinanoven,andin“LittleRedRidingHood”achildiseatenbyawolf.Whenherevisedthetalesforchildren,WilhelmGrimmretainedtheviolence.Infact,hesometimesevenrampeditup.Forexample,inthefirsteditionofthetales,Cinderellaforgiveshersistersattheend.It’sonlyinthesecondedition,theoneintendedforchildren,thatherbirdspeck(啄)outtheireyes.
