HewaswidelyadmiredinhisdayandevenMarkTwainwasoneofhisfans.“TheLadyortheTiger?
”isStockton’sbestknownwork.Whenitwaspunishedin1882,itcausedasensationthroughoutthecountryasreadersdebatedwhattheendingshouldbe.

Manyyearsagotherelivedacruelandsavageking.Thiskinghadawildandviolentimagination,andsincehewasking,hehadthepowertomakehiswishescometrue.
