LondonUnderground

Theworld’sfirstsubwaywasbuiltinLondonin1863.Atthetime,thegovernmentwaslookingforawaytoreducetrafficproblemsinthecityofLondon.Thepoorareasofthecityweresocrowdedwithpeoplethatitwasalmostimpossibleforhorsecarriagestogetthrough.ThecityofficialswereinterestedintryingtomakeitpossibleforworkerstoliveoutsideofLondonandtraveleasilytoworkeachday.Ifpeoplehadacheapandconvenientwaythattheycoulddependontogotoandfromwork,theywouldrelocatetheirhomesoutsideofthecity.Thiswouldhelpease(减轻)thepressureoftoomanypeoplelivinginthepoorpartsofLondon.Fromtheseproblems,theideaoftheLondonUnderground,thefirstsubwaysystem,wasborn.

TheplansforbuildingtheUndergroundmetwithseveralproblemsanddelays,butthefasttrackwasfinallyopenedinJanuary1863.Asteamtrainpulledthecarsalongthefastundergroundtrackwhichwas6kilometers(3.7miles)long.About30,000peoplegotonthesubwaythefirstday.Ridersweretreatedtocomfortableseats(standingupwhilethetrainwasmovingwasnotallowed),andpleasantdecorationsinsideeachofthecars.However,thesmokefromtheenginesoonfilledtheairinthetunnelswithashandsoot(煤灰),aswellaschemicalgases.Fanshadtobeputinthetunnelslatertokeeptheaircleanenoughforpeopletobreathe.Evenwithitsproblems,ridingintheUndergrounddidcatchon.Itcarried9millionridersinitsfirstyear.
