WeatherofficialssaidHurricaneEarlwasmovingnorthwardofftheU.S.coast,afterskirtingpartsoftheeasternCaribbeanthisweek,andthatresidentsinlow-lyingareasshouldbepreparedtoevacuateifneeded.

NationalHurricaneCenterDirectorBillReedsaidthestormshouldcontinuetoproduceverydangerousconditionsinAtlanticwatersasitmovesnorth.

"Wearegoingtohaveanimpactinthewayofdangerousswellsandsurf,ripcurrentsandbeacherosionasthestormmovesupthecoast,"saidReed."Evenaminorshiftbacktothewestcouldbringdirectimpactstoportionsofthecoastlinefromthemid-Atlanticnorthward."

Emergencyofficialssaidresidentsinlow-lyingcoastalareasfromNorthCarolinatoMaineshouldbepreparedforpossibleevacuationsincomingdays.Theysaidresidentsshouldmonitorlocalweatherofficials,whomaybeginissuingstormwarningsasEarlmovesclosertotheU.S.mainland.

FederalEmergencyManagementAgencyAdministratorCraigFugatesaidthemainconcernispossibleflooding.

"Theprimarythreathereisgoingtobestormsurge.Weusetropicalforcewinds,however,asabenchmarktohaveanevacuationcompletedbecausemanyoftheoverlandrouteswillincludehighbridgesandotherthingsthattropicalforcewindsmakeitextremelydangerous,"saidFugate.

Earlier,heavyrainsfromEarlcausedfloodinginlow-lyingareasofAntigua,andwindsrippedouttreesandblewdownpowerlinesonthenearbyislandofSt.Martin.OfficialsintheU.S.VirginIslandsandPuertoRicosaidtheyareworkingtorestoreelectricitytomorethan200,000peoplewhowereaffectedbythestorm.

Meanwhile,forecasterssaidresidentsoftheeasternCaribbeanshouldprepareforpossibleimpactfromanotherstormthathasformedintheAtlantic.TropicalStormFionaisexpectedtoreachpartsoftheareabyWednesday.

BillReedoftheNationalHurricaneCentersaysFionaisnotexpectedtocomeasclosetolandasEarldid.

"ItisforecasttoremainnortheastoftheislandsandnotimpacttheU.S.VirginIslandsandPuertoRicointhesameplacesthatwerehitbyEarl.ItisrunningparalleltoEarlandofftotheeast,maybeimpactingBermudabytheweekend,"saidReed.

CurrentforecastsshowFionamovingnorthonapaththatwillkeepitfarofftheU.S.EastCoast.

Hesaysthechallengeistogetthoseagentstoworkinhumans."Theproblemisthataswellasefficientlykillingmicro-organisms,theyaretovariousdegreestoxictomammaliancells.Soit'snotagreatideatocureinfectionifyoukillthepatientatthesametime."

Fightingtwomajorpathogens

Conlon'slaboratoryintheUnitedArabEmiratesworkswithsamplesfromfrogsgatheredcollaborativelybyscientistsinJapan,FranceandtheUnitedStates.
