Scientistshavebeenstudyingdifferentwaystobringbackthegreendesert.Throughresearchandexperiments,theyhopetobeabletoproduceplantsthatwillonceagainsupportthelifethere.Hugeholesfilledwithmuchwaterlieunderthedesertsurface.Scientistsbelievethisrainwatersimplyflewdownthroughthesandoverhundredsofyearsandcollectedinthebig,rockyholdingtanks.Bymakinguseofthesun’spower,scientistsintheSaharahavemadeexperimentsinwhichtheygothugeamountofelectricity.Thiselectricitywasthenusedtooperatedrillingmachinesandpumpstopulltherainwaterfromtheundergroundtanks.Bydrillingtheholeonemiledeepintothefloorofthedesert,onemachinewasabletorecovermorethan80gallonsofice—coldwatereachsecond,or288,000gallonsperhour.
