Differentcultureshavedifferentwaysofpresentingpointsofviewandofdrawingconclusions.Thewesternwaysofpresentingargumentativecasesanddrawingconclusionsisgenerallycharacterizedbyprecision,clarity,directness,explicitness,anddetailedness.Incontrast,Chineseapproachismoreassociatedwithvagueness,ambiguity,storiesinsteadoffacts,indirectarguments,beingreservedandsensitivetosituationsorcontexts.Differentpatternsofthinkingalsodeterminedifferentwaysofbehaving,sayingthings,presentingtheirarguments,anddrawingtheirconclusions.Inotherwords,wenowknowthatwhatisconsideredknowledgeorlogicalthinkingmayvarygreatlyacrosscultures.

Languagesdifferenormouslyfromoneanother,andthesedifferencesarerelatedtoimportantdifferencesinthecustomsandbehaviorsandotheraspectsoftheculturesinwhichthoselanguagereside.Inaword,languageisamirrorofculture.

Hereinmythesis,ImainlyfocusonsomecolorwordsbothinChineseandEnglish.Weknowtherearemanyconspicuouscontrastsbetweenthetwolanguages,sothecolorwordsare.Scholarshaveexploredthemforhundredsofyears.Iaminterestedinthissubjecteither.Iwritethispaperbasedontheresearchofthosegreatpersonsandroughlyexploretheculturalandlinguisticgapbetweenthetwolanguagesconcerned.

Thescientificresearchshowsthatthereareasmanyastwomillionkindsofidentifiedcolorsintheworld.BothChineseandEnglishhaveagreatquantityofdifferentwordstodepictcolors.Theyaresimilarlyclassifiedingeneral.Butduetodifferentcultures,differencesexistundoubtedlyinthetwolanguages.Inthispaper,Iwillexpressmythoughtsfromfollowingaspects:

differentcustoms,histories,religionsandliteraturesofthetwolanguages,thedevelopmentsofthetwolanguagesinthefollowingfutureandsoon.

Inconclusion,thedifferentusesofcolorwordsinChineseandEnglisharetightlyconnectedwiththedifferentculturesofthetwolanguages.

Itisacomplexcollectionofexperienceswhichconditiondailylife;itincludeshistory,socialstructure,religion,traditionalcustomsandeverydayusage.Cultureisanevasiveaswellasacomprehensiveconcept,andanall-encompassingformorpatternforliving.Whatpeopledo,howtheyact,andhowtheyliveandcommunicateareallresponsestotheirculture.Sincewehumanbeingsliveinthesamematerialworld,peoplealloveritdohaveagreatnumberofthingsincommon.Thatmakesourcommunicationpossiblewithpeoplefromvariouscultures.

Language;Sincecultureisdefinedas“thetotalwayoflifeofapeople”,nothingisofgreaterimportancethanthelanguagethroughwhichitsbeliefsareexpressedandtransmittedandbywhichmostinteractionsofitsmemberstakeplace.Infact,languageplayssuchavitalroleinculturethatsomesocialscientistsconsideritthekeystoneofculture.Withoutlanguage,theymaintain,culturewouldnotbepossible.

RelationshipbetweenCulture,Language,andTranslation:

Mytopicofthisthesisisthecontrastsofcolorwordsintwolanguages:

ChineseandEnglish.Thatwillinevitablyconnectthedifferenttranslationsofthetwolanguagestogether.Therefore,therelationshipbetweenculture,language,andtranslationiscrucialpartofthispaper.

Therelationshipbetweenlanguageandcultureisdialectical.Theintimaterelationshipbetweenlanguageandcultureleadsnaturallytothatbetweencultureandtranslation.Translationisrepresentationinonelanguageofwhatiswrittenorsaidinanotherlanguage.It’sabilingualartbecausetwodifferentlanguagesareinvolvedinthisactivity.

Inourdailylife,colorwordsarethecommonillustrationsoftheculturaldifferencesinlanguageuse.InChineseandEnglishcultures,colorwordsareinthesamewayinfluencedbycultures,andusedwidelyinpeople’sdailylife.Colorwordscontainalotofdeepmeanings,andimplydifferentethnicfeelings.Ifwedonottakeintoaccounttheimpactofculturaldifferences,wearedifficulttounderstandtheimplicitmeaningsofcolorwords.

Abstract:

Colorsarecloselyconnectedtohumanlife.Tosomeextent,therewouldn’tbecolorfullifewithoutvariouscolorsofnature.Colorisavitalregionforhumantoprobeintothematerialworld.Ithasnotonlyphysicalnaturesbutalsorichculturalconnotations.Becauseofdifferentcustoms,environments,religiousbeliefs,ethnicpsychology,politicsandeconomics,theunderstandingandfeelingstocolorwordsandmeaningaredifferent.Therefore,intranslatingthesewordsaboutcolor,culturaldifferencesaretobetakenintoconsideration.

Nowadays,languagesdevelopquicklyasthesocietyandeconomyflourish.Insomesituationssuchasincurrentscienceandeconomics,colorwordsinChineseandEnglishmaybeequal.

摘要：

色彩与人类的生活息息相关，就某种程度来说，没有五光十色的色彩，就没有多姿多彩的生活。

色彩是人类认识世界的重要领域，它不仅具有物理的本质属性，还有着丰富的文化内涵。

因为文化习俗，地理环境，宗教信仰，民族心里，政治经济的不同，对颜色词的理解和感受，颜色词的意义都有很大不同。

因此，在翻译关于颜色的词汇时，必须把文化差异这一因素考虑进去。

当下的社会经济繁荣，语言也发展迅速。

在当代科技经济等方面，中英文颜色词有时是可以等同于彼此的。
