Theword‘frontier’iscloselylinkedwiththeWestwardMovementofAmericansfrom1600sto1900s.Duringaperiodaslongas300years,immigrantscamecontinuouslyfromtheoldcontinenttotheunexplorednewlandandpusheditsfrontiersteadilyfromtheeasterncoastfurtherintothecontinenttillthePacificOceaninthewest,AlaskainthenorthandMexicangulfinthesouth.Theprocessofwestwardmovementistheprocessoftheformationofthenationandthecountry.Inotherwords,thewestwardmovementisimportantinthatitnotonlyhelpedtoexpandterritory,buttoshapethoseimmigrantsintoanintegratednationwithitsdistinctivenationalcharacter,knownastheAmericanspirit.Asahistoriansaid“ThefrontierdidmuchtoshapeAmericanlife”.
