BackGround

BeforeIjoinedthetrainingcourseIdidnothavemuchunderstandingorexperienceabouthypnosis.Myonlycloseencounterwiththesubjectmatterwasinabout1983inToronto,Canada.AtthattimeIwasdoingmydoctoratedegreeincivilengineering.InoneeveningIwentoutwithmyfriendstoanightclubintheHolidayInnwheretherewasstageperformancebyahypnotist.Hisperformancewasveryentertainingwithstunningeffects.Ithasgivenmeadeepimpressionofhowpowerfulhypnosiscanbeininfluencingthehumanmindandbehavior.Likeanyotherpeople,Ialsofeelthatitalsohasamysticscreenarounditasmanyofthephenomenaseemtobedifficulttoexplain.Iwasclearatthattimethathypnosisisscientificwithalongsuccessfulhistoryofclinicalapplicationspracticedworldwideinhelpingtheneededatallfronts,shoulditbequittingsmoking,overcomingpsychologicalbarriersorsimplyimprovingconfidenceofoneself.

MymindwasinacontinuestateofstressforthepasttwentyyearsaftertakingupseniorpositionsformanagingbusinessesinAsiaforUKengineeringconsultingfirms.DuetotimedifferencebetweenUKandAsia（aboutsevenhours’difference）itmeantlongworkinghoursinvolvingmanylateeveningtelephonecallsinordertocommunicatewithheadofficeintheUKwhenitwasmorningtheirtime.AtendoflastyearIeventuallydecidedthatitwasabouttimeformetoimprovequalityofmylifestyleandendthisprolongedperiodofoverstressing.IneedtoplanalifewhichispeacefulandmeaningfulwhichallowsmetheroomandtimetodothingsthatIwantedtodo.Suchthingscannotbedoneatallorimpracticaltodointhepastduemyworkcommitment.

IstatedtoworkparttimeearlythisyearasadvisortoChinacorporationstoimprovetheirskillsinprojectandbusinessmanagementadoptingthewesternapproach.WorkingtwodaysaweekparttimemadeavailabletometimethatisnotavailablebeforesothatIcanexploreotheroptionsthatIenjoydoing.Learninghypnotismimmediatelyflashedintomymind.AsmyhomeisinSingapore,bydefault,myfirstexplorationistolookatSingaporewebsitesforinformationforhypnosistrainingavailableinthecountry.Themostcredibleinstitutionofferingsuchcourses（inassociationwithlocalhospitalsforclinicalpractices）wasLCCH（LondonCollegeofClinicalHypnosis）.Howevertheircoursesweremoretargetedtoexistinghealthcarepersonnelandcourseswereconductedoverweekendsoutsideworkinghours.Forbeginners’course,thecoursewillspreadoverafewmonths’time.Practicallyspeaking,Ihavetwoconcernsforenrolmentinsuchcourses.FirstlyitwillbedifficultformetomakephysicalpresenceinSingaporetravellingthereeverymonthasthiswillnotbeinlinewithmycurrentworkplaninChina.Secondly,asIcamefromnohealthcareworkingbackground,thechanceofadmittancemaynotbehighasthenumberofapplicationswasoverwhelmingbutthenumberofvacancieswaslimited.IthenstartedtosearchChinawebsitesandfoundhypnosistrainingavailableinShenzhenwithafourdayprogram.AsmycurrentworkingplaceisalsoinShenzhenitsuitedmeseamlessly.Ialsointroducedthecoursetotwoofmyfriends,onefromHongKongandonefromSingapore.Bothofthemalsofoundthesubjectinterestingandeventuallysignedupforthetraining.UnfortunatelymyfriendfromHongKongwascaughtupinalastminutefunctionandcouldnotattendthecourse.ItwaseventuallymeandmyfriendfromSingaporegonethroughandcompletedthecoursewhichextendedfrom28thofMarchto1stofAprilinclusive

Myobjectivesforattendingthecoursewerefourfoldaspresentedbelow.

（1）PersonalInterestinHypnosis

Asexplainedearly,thehypnotist’sperformanceinTorontohasgivenmeadeepimpressionofthepowerofhypnotism.Curiositywastheprimedriverformetogainmoreunderstandingaboutthesubjectinparticulartouncoverrealitybehindthemysticscreen.Thiswillalsobeachallengetomashypnosisisnotconsideredas“traditional”tomostpeople.

AgainforthehypnosisshowIfounditextremelyentertainingandenjoythewholenight.Iimaginedthatjustbymasteringsomeofthebasictechniquesofhypnosiswillallowmetodemonstratesomeformofhypnotismsayinasocialgatheringorpublicfunction.Thiscaninturnallowsmeeasiertobuildrapportandgainacquaintancewitholdandmoreimportantlynewfriends.Intermofthequalityofsociallifethismeansenrichment.

Ithasalwaysbeenmyunderstandingthatthroughselfhypnotismonecanimproveone’sfeelingsandbehaviorinmanybeneficialways.FormycaseinparticularIneedtoimprovequalityofmysleepandalsowatchmyweightthroughappetitecontrol.

（4）Hypnotismhasgoodpotentialasabusinessafterretirement

Iconsiderthathypnotismhasahighpotentialtobedevelopedintoabusinessaftermyretirement.BydoingthisIcanlendahelpinghandtopeoplewhoneedsassistanceandsupport.Thiswillbeameaningfulthingtodo.Ofcourseatthesametimesuchservicescanalsogeneratesomeincome,whetherbigorsmallwillbeofsecondaryconcern.ThemoregreyhairIhave,themoreconfidencepeoplemayhaveinme.Iftheultimatedecisionistoofferclinicaltherapythenthecostofsettingupaclinicwillalsobesomethingmanageableascomparedtoamedicalclinic.

Myviewabouthypnosisafterdigestionandanalysisofmaterialscoveredinthetrainingcourseispresentedbelow.WithmyacademicandcareerbackgroundaspresentedearlierIconsidermyselfbeinganintellectualwithastrongrationalmindset.Itismyintentiontoputtogetherthispaperbasedonpresentationbytheinstructorandalsocontentofthetrainingmaterialinanorganizedandstructuredmanner.Inordertoachievethis,Ineedtohaveareasonablegraspofalltopicsandunderstandtheirinterrelationship.WheretherearegapsthenIwillconductInternetsearchasfutureactionssothatsuchgapscanbefilledinandthispaperupdatedforcompleteness.

DefinitiveDescriptionofHypnosisProcess

Asthecourseprogressed,themysticalnatureofhypnosisstartedtodisappearwhenmoreunderstandingofthesubjecthasbeengained.Tohelpmyselftohaveaclearerpictureofhypnosis,Ihaveputtogetherdefinitivedescriptionbasedonmybasicunderstandingofhypnosis.Thedescriptionwillbebyfunctional,process,stateandfinallyitseffectonsubjects.Thiswilllaythecornerstonesbasedonwhichtherestofthewrite-upwillbedeveloped.

Tothesubject,hypnosisformsabridgebetweenhisconsciousandunconsciousmindlettingthelatterinfluencingtheformertoperformcertainthings,eitherphysicallyormentally.Thedefinitiongivenonpage35ofthelecturenotesseemstobeabitabstractanddifficulttocomprehendastheremaybesomeinvolvementofreligiouselements.Asaprocesshypnosisisinteractionbetweenthehypnotistandthesubjectandthroughcontinuousandrepeatedstimulationsbythehypnotist,thesubjectwilltakesuggestionsleadingtodifferentdegreesofchangesinbehaviors,feelings,sensations,images,perceptions,thoughts,beliefs,and/orphysicalfunctionsorsymptoms.Thehypnotistcanalsobethesubjecthimselfandforthiscaseitistermed“selfhypnotism”.Thesubjectisintoahypnoticstatewhenhisbodyentersintodeeprelaxationandconcentration,becomesincreasinglyabsorbedinusinghisimaginationwhilestillmaintainsawakeandisfullyawareofeverythingthatisgoingon,

Purposesofhypnosisaretypicallyintendedforrelaxation,calmness,confidence,increasedself-controlandmoreimportantlyforthewell-beingofthesubject.Forthecaseofhypnotherapythepatientisabletoclearawaymental"clutter"andfocusonhisproblemandsolutionstotheproblem.Treatmentscanbetargetedatdrugadditions;alcoholism;depressions;phobias;smokingcessation;weightcontroletc.basicallyunlimitedwheresolutiontoproblemscanbesoughtthroughinfluencingthemindsofthesubject

Despitethefactthatalloftheaboveitemsshouldbetreatedofequalimportance,atthecurrentstageforbeginnersthemasteringofinduction（Itreatsensitivitytestsasawarmupformofinduction）anddeepeningtechniqueswillbeofhighpriorityaswithoutthesemeansofputtingthesubjectintoasleepstate,theultimateobjectivesofconductinghypnosiscannotbeachieved.Thisunderstandingwasalsoechoedthroughoutthecourseastheinstructordevotedmuchtimeinteachingthesetechniquesandallowedampletimeforattendeestopracticeespeciallyintheeveningonwhattheyhavelearnedduringdaytimetraining.Forthisreason,contentofthispaperwillbedevotedmoretothefirstthreeprocedures.

Ashypnosis（selfhypnosisiscoveredatalatersection）isaninteractionbetweenthehypnotistandthesubject,itisnecessarythatareasonabledegreeoftrustbebuiltbetweenthesubjectandthehypnotistespeciallyfortheinstancewhenthetwomeetsthefirsttime.Asapre-inductionrequisiteitisthereforeimportantforthehypnotisttocreaterapportwiththesubject.Thiscanbeachievedthroughfriendlygestures（sayhandshaking,pullingachairforthesubject.etc）andverbalcommunications.Thecontentofthedialogueisbesttofindthingsincommon（saycomingfromthesamehometo
