Multi-ethniccultureshockisaveryimportantproblemininter-culturalcommunication.Peopleusuallyrealizelessaboutit,sotheywilloftenmakesomemistakes.Weshouldknowmorecultureshockandlearnhowtoavoidthem.

摘要
文化冲击在跨文化交际中是一个很重要的问题,而通常人们很少意识到不同国家、不同民族之间的文化冲击。
这就是为什么总有人在这方面犯错误。
我们应该了解学习更多文化冲击,并学会如何避免这种问题。

1.Introduction
Multi-ethniccultureshockisaveryimportantproblemininter-culturalcommunication.Peopleusuallyrealizelessaboutit,sotheywilloftenmakesomemistakes.Weshouldknowmorecultureshockandlearnhowtoavoidthem.
Cultureshockisjustlikeanoccupationaldiseaseofpeoplewhohavebeensuddenlytransplantedabroad.Wedonotknowhowtotalk,shakehands,shopping,andevenhowtosay‘hi’.
Wehaveowncustom,whichweusemorethantwentyyears.Allofthesehavebeenourbeliefandcreed.Sowecannotadaptthemquickly.
Nowadays,withthedevelopmentofmultimediatechnology,weknowmoreinformationsaboutcultureshock,suchaswhentwoAmericanssaidtheyaredatingwitheachother,itdonotmeanstheyarecouple.Howamazingnews!
Now,let’sseesomecommoncultureshock.
2.Examples
1.Cultureshockingreetsomebodyindifferentcountry
Nowadays,mostcountriesadapttogreetpeoplebyshakinghands,butnoteverycountryadaptsit.Japaneseusedtogreetsomebodywithbow.Themakeabowwitheachothertoshowtheiresteem.Inthissituation,somemistakeswillberaised.AnAmericanpeoplemeetwithaJapanese.TheAmericanreacheshishand,buthetouchestheJapanese’sheadjustright.Thisisveryembarrassed.
Franceisaveryromanticcountry,Frenchalwaysshowstheiremotionwithexaggeratedbodylanguage.Theygreeteachotherwithhug,andevenkisseachotheronthecheek.Iftheirguestsareshyorclose-minded,theymaybenotveryhappy.
IntheArabStates,twooldfriendsmeeteachothernotonlyshookhandsandembraced,veneer.Whenthesalute,holdeachother’sleftshoulderwiththerighthand,lefthandarmsaroundtheopponent’swaist,left-right-leftfacingthreetimes.Iftwopeoplecloseto,alsowillbeissued.Believeitornot,Icannotadaptthiswaytoshowmyhappiness.

Inwestcountry,theythinkwhitemeansclean,chaste,andelegant,sotheyalwayswearwhiteweddingdressintheirweddingceremony.
But,redinBritishmeansatrocity,andwhiteinChinameansominous.Thisisaverybigdifferentintwocultures,ifpeopleneglectthiscultureshock,itwillbeadisaster.
Greenisavividcolor,butnoteverycountries’peoplelikeit.
Peoplewholiveindesertlikegreenverymuch.Intheiropinion,greenshowsvitality,theyusegreenontheirnationalflag.ButJapanesedonotlikegreen,theythinkgreenisominous.Egyptianthinkgreenisevil,andEnglishhategreenbecausetheyalwaysmakeshroudinolivegreen.
3.Flowerindifferentcountries
CarnationinChinaalwaysmeansbenediction,weusuallygivecarnationtomothertowishherhappymother’sday.Butinforeigncountries,carnationshowsrefuse.
Tulipinturkeymeansthesymboloflove,butinGermanytheythinktulipistheflowerwhichshowsindifference.
PeonyinChinameansrichandhonored,butinGermanytheythinkpeonymeansshyandovercautious.
Chrysanthemumismoreinteresting.InJapan,theyusechrysanthemumtosymbolizeimperialhousehold,butinEurope,chrysanthemumonlyusedtosacrificeatcemetery.InChina,chrysanthemumshowsintegrity,butItalyandLatinAmericacountriesthinkchrysanthemumismonsterinflower.
LotuswaterlilyinChinameanschaste,butinJapanlotuswaterlilymeansunlucky.

Trytothinkthatfacinganewcultureismorelikeamentalchallengethanaphysicalone.
Lookforwardtopersonalchange-oneresultoflivinginanotherculturewillbethatyouwillbechange,youwillbeonyourwaytobecomingabilingual,biculturalperson.
