ThefirstsuccesscamefromAustralia.MosquitoescarryingWolbachiawerereleasedinpartsofNorthQueenslandstartingin2011,andgraduallyspreadthroughthelocalmosquitopopulation.Dengueisspreadwhenamosquitobitessomeonewhoisinfected,andthenbitesanotherperson,butsomehowWolbachiablocksthat—andlocalspreadhasnearlydisappearedinthoseNorthQueenslandCommunities,Simmonssaid.
