Alongwithhergreatsuccess,however,NatalieColehaslivedinaworldofdrugs,crime,andfailedmarriages.

InthebookAngelonMyShoulder,Colegivesusanhonestlookatthedifficultpathshehastaken,sharing,aswell,hersuccessfulrecovery.

“WhereI’matnowhelpsmetolookbackonmylifeandrealizethatI’vereallyhadquiteacolorfulandrichlife,”shesays.“Ireallycouldhaveturnedouttobeadifferentperson.”

AstheseconddaughterofMariaandNatKingCole,Nataliehadasnormalachildhoodaswaspossibleforalittlegirlwhosefatherspentmuchofhistimeawayfromhome.Withhopesofonedaybecomingadoctor,sheleftherfamilyinLosAngelestoattendaboardingschoolontheeastcoast.Butwhenshewas14,shereceivedsometerriblenews:

Withoutenoughmoneytopaythebillsandtosupportherdrughabit,Coleturnedtostealingandgotintotroublewiththelaw.Eventually,shebecamesobadlyaffectedbythedrugsthatshedecidedtoquitonthespot.

Shesaysitwasamiracle—theworkofanangelonhershoulder.Herdrughabitkicked,Natalie’scareerreallybegantotakeoff.Onlytwoyearsafterbeingarrestedandalmostdyingbecauseofdrugs,Cole’sfirstrecordwontwoGrammies.
