OneorganizationseekingtosaveworldlanguagesisWikitongues.Ithasasimplegoal:
toprovidethetoolsandsupportthatpeopleneedtosavetheirlanguages.Whenalanguagedisappears,manyotherthingscangoawayaswell.Forexample,partsofacommunity’sculture,knowledgeandidentitycanalsobelost.
Becauseofthis,Udell,co-founderofWikitongues,believestheprocessofbringinglanguagesbackmustbedonebycommunitymembersthemselves.Hesaid,“Thereisnowayanoutsideorganizationcansavesomeone’slanguageforthem.”
Wikitongueswasstartedin2016asanopenInternetcollectionofworldlanguages.Theself-described“community”isoperatedbyvolunteersfromaroundtheworld.ThecollectionisintheformoflanguagevideosthatpeoplespeakingthelanguagesaddtotheWikitongueswebsite.
Udellsayssavinglanguagesdoescount.Therearemanyexamplesoflanguagesthatdisappearedbutlaterreturnedtouse.“Hebrewwentextinct(灭绝的)inthefourthcenturyBC,andwasrevived(重新使用)inthe1800s.Nowonceagain,it’sthemothertongueofhalfoftheworld’sJewishpopulation.”AnotherexampleisaNativeAmericantribe.Thetribe’slanguagewentextinctinthe1940s.Butthetribehasbeenabletosuccessfullybuildup“languagerecovery”inrecentyears.
OneofWikitongues’volunteersisTheronKolokwe,wholivesinNamibia.HisnativelanguageisSubiya,whichisspokenbyabout30,000people.
“Iwanttheworldtoknowaboutmylanguage,”Kolokwesaid.Buthisgoalgoesbeyondjustsharinghislanguagewithothersthroughvideos.Heisalsoworkingtocreateadictionaryandlanguageteachingmaterialsthatcanbeusedinschools.
