TECHNICALFIELD

Thisinventionrelatesgenerallytoaquickchangeinsertforafinishingarmandmoreparticularlytoaquickchangeinsertsystemforamicrofinishingarmonamicrofinishingmachine.

BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION

“Microfinishing”or“superfinishing”,asitisknownintheart,isasurfacefinishingprocesswhereinagrindingmeansisbroughttobearagainstaworkpiecewhichhasbeenpreviouslyroughground.Microfinishingisalowvelocityabradingprocesswhichgenerallyfollowsroughgrinding.Becausemicrofinishingincorporateslowercuttingspeedsthangrinding,heatandpressurevariantsmaybeminimizedtoprovideimprovedsizeandgeometrycontrol.Thoseskilledintheartrecognizethatsurfacequalityorroughnessismeasuredinroughnessaveragevalues(Ra)whereinRaisthearithmeticalaveragedeviationofminutesurfaceirregularitiesfromhypotheticalperfectsurfaces.Microfinishingcanprovidesurfacequalityofapproximately1to10μin.(0.025to0.25μm).Bearingsurfacesofcrankshafts,camshafts,powertransmissionshaftsinsimilarmachinecomponentsthatrotateonjournalbearingsurfacesgenerallyrequirethissurfacefinishforsatisfactoryoperation.

Conventionalmassproductionmicrofinishingmachineshavetheabilitytofinishallthebearingsurfacesonaworkpieceinoneoperation.Thesemachinescontainapluralityofabrasivetapesegmentswhicharealignedwithrespecttothebearingsurfaces.Inoperation,theworkpiecesarerotatedasthemicrofinishingmachinecausesabrasivetapesegmentstocontactandthusfinishthebearingsurfaces.Theselargemulti-abradingmachinesarecapableofsuccessivestepsinoneoperationincludingroughgrinding,grindingandmicrofinishing.

Asiscommoninlargescaleproduction,failuresmayoccuratoneormoreofthegrindingareasorabrasivetapepositions.Asaresult,workpiecesmaybeproducedwithoneormorebearingsurfaces(butlessthanallbearingsurfaces)whicharenotfinishedtotherequiredsurfacequalityspecifications.Insuchcases,thegrindingmachineoperatormustthenremoveandscrapthedefectiveworkpiece.Becausemicrofinishingisthefinalstageinsurfacetreatmentoperations,i.e.afterroughgrindingandgrinding,thescrappingofmicrofinishedpartsresultsinasubstantiallossofbothmaterialandlabortothemachinist.

Microfinishingprocessesareusedinautomotiveapplicationsinthemanufacture,repairandrebuildingofinternalcombustion(IC)engines.Suchenginesnotonlyrequirefinelyfinishedbearingsurfacesforengineefficiency,butalsoforincreaseddurabilityandlongevity.Intheinitialmanufacturingstage,crankshaftandcamshaftbearingsurfacesaremicrofinishedtoparticularroughnessspecificationsbypreviouslymentioned,conventionalmassproductionmicrofinishingmachines.

Intherepairorrebuildingstages,enginecomponentssuchascrankshaftsandcamshaftsfromfaultyenginesorolderengines,areremovedandregroundtoremovetentothirty-thousandthsofaninchofstockfromtheexistingbearingsurfaces.Thebearingsurfacesofthesecomponentsarethenpolishedormicrofinishedbyplacingtherespectiveworkpiecesonalatheandmanuallybringingamicrofinishingmaterialincontactwiththerotatingbearingsurfaces.Thismicrofinishingmaterialisoftenasectionofabrasivematerialmountedonasupportcorrespondinglyshapedtothebearingsurface.Itisgenerallyrecognizedintheindustrythatthesemanualfinishingoperationsareinadequateforachievingfinishedsurfacesofstandardquality.

Automotiverepairandrebuildingoperationsreclaimandrefinishworkpiecesfromhundredsofvariousinternalcombustionengineswithdifferentdesigns.Programmablycontrollingafinishingmachinetoaccepteachindividualworkpiecethatrequiresmicrofinishingfromdifferentinternalcombustionenginesisuneconomicalandinefficient.

SUMMARYOFTHEINVENTION

Thequickchangeinsertsystemofthepresentinventionhasbeendevelopedtomeettheneedforaquickchangeinfinishinginsertstodecreasemaintenanceandrepairdownofmicrofinishingmachines.andwellasaddgreaterflexibilityandspeedininserttypechanges.

Accordingly,itisanobjectofthepresentinventiontoprovideaquickchangeinsertsystemforafinishingarmwhichallowsinsertchangewithouttheuseoftools.

Anotherobjectofthepresentinventionistoprovideaprovideaquickchangeinsertsystemforafinishingarmwhichallowsinsertchangeusingapressfitconnectionsystem.

AnothermorespecificobjectofthepresentinventionistoprovideAmicrofinishingmachinecomprisingasupporttablehavingameansforrotatingaworkpieceaboutanaxisandasliderailadjacenttheaxis,abaseincludingaboreforslidablyreceivingthesliderailandmovablewithrespecttotheworkpiece,abodyaffixedtothebasedefiningatrackadaptedtobepositionedadjacenttheworkpieceandhavingapairofpivotpinsspacedfromthetrack,aslidemovableonthetrack,afirstarmandasecondarmpivotableonthepivotpins,thearmshavingafirstendadaptedtoreceiveaquickchangeinsertsystemforfinishingtheworkpieceandasecondend,linkmeansconnectingtheslidetothesecondendofthearmsformovingthearmsaboutthepivotpinstoextendthearmsfromatreatmentenablingpositionadjacenttheworkpiecetoatreatmentpositionwhereinthesurfacegrindingmeansengagestheworkpiece,actuatingmeansformovablyengagingtheslideandthearms,theactuatingmeansoperativetomovethearmsbetweenthetreatmentenablingpositionandthetreatmentposition,andasleeveaffixedtothebodyforreceivingandguidingtheactuatingmeans,andasupportmeansaffixabletothebaseforpivotallysupportingthebodywithrespecttotheworkpiecewherebythequickchangeinsertincludesaaninsertbodyhavingaconnectionsideandafinishingside,theconnectionsideincludingakeywaydefinedbyacentralwallandapairofoppositelydisposedsidewalls,thefinishingsideincludingatleastonefinishingsupportsurface,andafinishingarmhavinganextendingkeyincludingacentralshoulderandapairofoppositelydisposedsidewallswhereintheinsertbodykeywayandfinishingkeyarecorrespondinglymatinglyshapedinapressfitrelationshipwherebytheinsertbodyisretainedonthefinishingarmduringfinishing.
