IKEA’snamecomesfromKamprad’sinitials(I.K.)andtheplacewherehegrewup(‘E’and‘A’).TodayIKEAisknownforitsmodern,minimalistfurniture,butitwasnotafurniturecompanyinthebeginning.Rather,IKEAsoldallkindsofmiscellaneousgoods.
Kamprad’sgoodsincludedanythingthathecouldsellforprofitsatdiscountedprices,includingwatches,pensandstockings.
IKEAfirstbegantosellfurniturethroughamail-ordercataloguein1947.ThefurniturewasalldesignedandmadebymanufacturersnearKamprad’shome.Initialsaleswereveryencouraging,soKampradexpandedtheproductline.FurniturewassuchasuccessfulaspectofthebusinessthatIKEAbecamesolelyafurniturecompanyin1951.
In1953IKEAopeneditsfirstshowroominAlmhult,Sweden.IKEAisknowntodayforitslargestoreswithfurnitureinattractivesettings,butintheearly1950s,peopleorderedfromcatalogues.Thusresponsetothefirstshowroomwasoverwhelming:
