PursuanttotheETSIIPRPolicy,noinvestigation,includingIPRsearches,hasbeencarriedoutbyETSI.NoguaranteecanbegivenastotheexistenceofotherIPRsnotreferencedinSR 000 314(ortheupdatesontheETSIWebserver)whichare,ormaybe,ormaybecome,essentialtothepresentdocument.

1Scope

Thepresentdocumentdescribesthemodulationandchannelcodingsystem(denotedthe"System"forthepurposesofthepresentdocument)forDigitalSatelliteNewsGathering(DSNG)andothercontributionapplicationsbysatellite.

AccordingtoITU-RRecommendationSNG.770-1[12],SNGisdefinedas"Temporaryandoccasionaltransmissionwithshortnoticeoftelevisionorsoundforbroadcastingpurposes,usinghighlyportableortransportableuplinkearthstations...".Theequipmentshouldbecapableofuplinkingthevideoprogramme(orprogrammes)withitsassociatedsoundorsoundprogrammesignals.Optionallyitshouldbecapableofprovidingtwo-wayco-ordination(communication)circuitsanddatatransmissionaccordingtoEN301222[6].Theequipmentshouldbecapableofbeingsetupandoperatedbyacrewofnomorethantwopeoplewithinareasonablyshorttime.Limitedreceivingcapabilityshouldbeavailableintheuplinkterminaltoassistinpointingtheantennaandtomonitorthetransmittedsignal,wherepossible.

Digitaltelevisioncontributionapplicationsbysatelliteconsistofpoint-to-pointorpoint-to-multipointtransmissions,connectingfixedortransportableuplinkandreceivingstations,notintendedtobereceivedbythegeneralpublic.

AlthoughtheseapplicationsoftentransmitasingleTVservice,theTransportStreammultiplexflexibilityalsoallowsmulti-programmeTVserviceswithassociatedsound,includingcommentarysoundchannelsanddataservices;inthiscasemultipleservicecomponentsareTimeDivisionMultiplexed(TDM)onasingledigitalcarrier.

MaximumcommonalitywithEN300421 [3]ismaintained,suchasTransportStreammultiplexing[1],scramblingforenergydispersal,concatenatederrorprotectionstrategybasedonReed-Solomoncoding,convolutionalinterleavingandinnerconvolutionalcoding.ThebaselineSystemcompatiblyincludes(asasubset)allthetransmissionformatsspecifiedbyEN300421[3],basedonQuaternaryPhaseShiftKeying(QPSK)modulationandissuitableforDSNGservicesaswellasforothercontributionapplicationsbysatellite.Nevertheless,otheroptional(annexCexplainsthemeaningof"optional"withinthepresentdocument)transmissionmodesareadded,usingEightPhaseShiftKeying(8PSK)modulationandSixteenQuadratureAmplitudeModulation(16QAM),inordertofulfilspecificapplicationrequirements.Theseoptionalmodescanbeveryefficientincertaincontributionapplicationsbysatellite.

Thefollowingwarningsshouldbetakenintoaccountwhileusingthehighspectrumefficiencymodes,8PSKand16QAM:

theyrequirehighertransmittedEIRPsand/orreceivingantennadiameters,becauseoftheirintrinsicsensitivitytonoiseandinterferences;

theyaremoresensitivetolinearandnon-lineardistortions;inparticular16QAMcannotbeusedontranspondersdrivennearsaturation;

theyaremoresensitivetophasenoise,especiallyatlowsymbolrates;thereforehighqualityfrequencyconvertersshouldbeused(seeannexE);

theSystemmodulation/codingschemesarenotrotationally-invariant,sothat"cycle-slips"and"phasesnaps"inthechaincanproduceserviceinterruptions;thereforefrequencyconversionsanddemodulationcarrierrecoverysystemsshouldbedesignedtoavoidcycle-slipsandphasesnaps.

TheSystemissuitableforuseondifferentsatellitetransponderbandwidths,eitherinsinglecarrierpertransponderorinmultiplecarrierspertransponder(FrequencyDivisionMultiplex,FDM)configuration.AnnexEgivesexamplesofpossibleuseoftheSystem.

Thepresentdocument:

-givesageneraldescriptionoftheSystem;

-specifiesthedigitallymodulatedsignalinordertoallowcompatibilitybetweenpiecesofequipmentdevelopedbydifferentmanufacturers.Thisisachievedbydescribingindetailthesignalprocessingprinciplesatthemodulatorside,whiletheprocessingatthereceivesideisleftopentodifferentimplementationsolutions.However,itisnecessaryinthepresentdocumenttorefertocertainaspectsofreception;

-identifiestheglobalperformancerequirementsandfeaturesoftheSystem,inordertomeettheservicequalitytargets.
