ArkaitzGarro,aWeTransfersoftwareengineerinHolland,decidedtousehisskillstosolvetheproblem.Insteadofsettingupagoodoldcatflap(猫洞)onhisdoor,hewentforamorehightechsolutioninvolvingartificialintelligence,motiondetection(运动检测)sensors,facerecognitionsoftwareandamessagingapp.Itmaybeoverkill,butArkaitzclaimsthatitonlytookhimafewhourstodoit,asallthehardwareandsoftwareheusedarereadilyavailable.

Itallstartedafewyearsago,whenGarroandhiswifespottedacatintheirbackbalcony.Notknowingifithadbeenabandoned,lostbyitsowner,orsimplyhomeless,theytookitin,butalsopostedsomepicturesofitaroundtheirneighborhood,incasesomeonewaslookingforit.

“Wefoundoutthatthecathadanowner,justafewhousesawayandhewasveryhappyto‘share’thecatwithus.Nowithastwofamilieswholovehim,”Arkaitzsaid.“So,hehasdevelopedascheduletocomeataroundspecifictimes.”

TheproblemwasthatneitherGarronorhiswifecouldsimplystandbythedoorwaitingforittoshowup,sohecameupwithadevicemadeupofaminicomputercompletewithacamerathatwouldusemotiondetectionandimage-recognitionAIsoftwaretoautomaticallyidentifythecatandthenmessagehimsohecouldlettheanimalin.

“Wejustwanttobenotifiedwhenheisaround,”Arkaitzexplained.“Whenitdetectsmovement,itsendsthepicturetoarecognitionsoftware,whichchecksagainsttheidentityofthecatbasedonpreviousimageofthecat.”

“Ittookmejustafewhourstoputallthepiecestogetherandthesoftwareupandrunning,butsomemoretimeaftertofine-tunethesoftwaretobeabletorecognizethecat,”Arkaitzsaid,butintheenditprovedtobeeffective.
