Therearetwobasictypesofswitchingtechniques:

ThetermISDNwasfirstdefinedwithintheCCITTin1972.Itreferredtoanetworkprovidingend-to-enddigitalconnectivityforarangeofservices.Italsousedtheideaofatotallyopennetworkwithuniversallyavailableandstandardized“ports”thatcanplugineverywhere.Theconcepthassincethenevolvedfromtheexistingtelephonenetworksofcountriesundergoingchangesduetotheintroductionoftotallynewdigitaltechnologyintheswitchingandtransmissionequipment.Similarly,theintroductionofvoiceencodingtechniquesusingpulsecodemodulationcontributedtotheconcept’sevolution.Initially,voiceencodingwasbasedupona64kbit/stransmissionrate.Todaytwo64kbit/s,or2B-channelscoupledwithabasicaccesssignalingrateof16kbit/s,thatis,theD-channel,constitutetheessentialIADNtransmissionrateof144kbit/s.CurrentlyPSTN,availableinalmost200countriesandterritoriesaroundtheworld,offersuniversalvoiceaccesstoalmost750milliontelephonesaroundtheworld.ISDNisthenetworkwhichwillprogressivelyprovideasimilaruniversalaccessfornotonlyvoicebutdata,facsimile,video,text,andotherservicesaswell.
Intheindustrializedcountries,theevolutionarynatureoftheISDNconcepthasbeenamatterofeconomicpracticalityconsideringthevasttelephoneinfrastructurealreadyinplace.Theprimaryemphasis,however,hasbeentheenhancementoftheservicesratherthanasinglereplacementoftheservicesratherthanasinglereplacementofexistingequipment.Thisevolutionaryapproachhasalsomeritformostofthedevelopingcountries,althoughinsomeinstanceswhereanalogfacilitiesdonotexistpresentlyorwheretheyareverylimited,thedirectinstallationofdigitalfacilitiescouldallowadirectleapfrogtoISDNcapabilities.
ManyplannersbelievethatthetransitionformexperimentalISDNtechnologytooperationalsystemwillbeconvincinglymadeinthenextfewyears.Certainlythe1990swillbethetimeofrapidoperationalgrowth.Iftrue,alotofissueswillhavetoberesolvedincomingmonthsratherthanincomingyears.ThecurrentstudyperiodoftheCCITT(1989~1992)will,ofnecessity,resolvevirtuallyallstandardsissuesonISDNincludingevenwidebandISDNfortransmissionratesupto155Mbit/s.
