Roberts’interestinpuppetsstartedwhenhereceivedsomebeautifulglovepuppetsoneChristmas.HestartedputtingonshowswiththeseforfamilyandfriendsandthenmovedontohandmadeChinesestringpuppets.Learningmostlyfrombooksandpersonalexperience,heexplains,“Iwasalreadyspendingmostofmyfreetimecarvingpuppetsandputtingonshows,soIhardlynoticedthechangefromstudentstofull-timeprofessionalpuppeteer.”

Thepuppetsaredesignedspecificallyforeachshow,whichisextremelytimeconsuming.AccordingtoRoberts,“Sometimeswhatyouexpectandwhatyouactuallycreateintheendaretwoverydifferentthings.I’vemadesomeofmybestpuppets‘accidentally’.”
