Hereareafewstrategiesthatmayworkforyou.
IfyouhavepoorEnglish,youareautomaticallyatadisadvantagewhentheemployerparesyoutootherjobapplicants.Evenwiththemosttolerant,patient,andforgivingattitude,theemployercanmakeadecisionbasedonlyuponwhatheorshecanunderstandaboutthepotentialemployee.Yet~allknowpersonally,orknowstoriesofjob-seekerswithbadEnglishwhohavebeenhired.
Whataretheirsecrets?
Theirsecretsarebuiltaroundtheideaofpleteandeffectivemunication,asopposedtotheideaofattainingpleteandaccentlessfluencyinEnglish.Complete,ofcoursereferstotheuseofdifferentavenuesandmediaofmunication;andeffectivemeanstomakeachangeintheemployer’sknowledgeorattitude.ThefollowingstrategiesarebuiltaroundexpandingthenumberoftoolstheESLjob-seekerhastomunicatetheirvaluetotheemployer,andtomakingthosetoolsmoreeffective.
1.ModelNorthAmericanBodyLanguage
Nonverballanguageisveryimportant,andwhenyourabilitiesinspokenEnglisharelow,itbeesevenmoresignificant.Ifyoudon’thavethewordsandphrasesinEnglishtomunicateyourfriendliness,desireforthejob,self-confidence,considerationfortheemployer,andsoon,yourbodymustdothework.

Employersdon’tneedforyoutospeakandreadenoughEnglishtotalkaboutcurrentevents;theyneedyoutohavetheEnglishthatisusedintheparticularjobtheyarehiringfor.
ConcentrateyourEnglishbeamingonthosetechnicalwordsandphraseswhichareusedmostofteninthejobyouwant.Memorizethepropernamesofthemachines,tools,software,books,andproceduresyouwilluse.Knowthenamesoftheproductsorservicesyouwillbeselling;ifyouareatechnician,knowtheappropriatetechnicallanguage.
Yourmasteryofthejargoninyourfielddemonstratesyourbasicpetenceandskillstotheemployer,despiteotherdifficultiesyoumaybehavingwithEnglish.

Everyoneofushaswords,orphrases,orevenparticularsoundswhichcauseustroubletospeakortounderstand.Theonlywaytogetbetteristopractice.Muchinthesamewaythatyouputyourenergiesintobeamingthejargonofyourworkplace,itisbettertoworkonyourchronicproblemsinEnglishthantogetjustalittlebetteroverall.Thisisbecauseitisnaturalfortheemployertonoticeandtorememberwhenyouhaveaproblemwithaparticularwordorphrase.
Makesureyouknowtheappropriate,orproperuseofawordorphrase,particularlyifitisacolloquialism.Fifteenminutesofagoodinterviewcanbelostwhenyousuddenlycannotpronouncetheword“therapeutic’,orifyouusethephrase“Don’thaveacow,man”.
