Closethegates"Heknewtherecouldbemanyvehiclesinsidethetunnelalready.Thicksmokepouredintothetunnel.Finallyturningthevan(客货车)roundinposition,Olavjumpedoutandopenedhecardoors.Thetouristsstartedtopilein.Olavranroundtomakesurenoonewasleftbehind.

Inonestudy,theresearchersplayedavideoofsomeoneusingAustrianSignLanguage,showingittobothsignlanguageusersandnon-users.Then,theyaskedtheparticipantstochoosethemomentsinthevideothattheythoughtdividedthephrasesgrammatically.Thesignersandnon-signersmostlyidentifiedthesamehandmovements.However,farmoresignersthannon-signersidentifiednon-manualelementsasvitaltothesentencesgrammaticalmeaning.Thisshowsthatsignlanguageisascomplicatedasanyforeignlanguage,withagrammaticalstructurethatischallengingfornon-users.
Thesecondstudyassessedjusthowmanydifferentthingsnon-manualelementscando.Forthisstudy,allparticipantsweredeafusersofAustrianSignLanguage.Againwatchingavideoofsomeoneusingsignlanguage,theyhadtodescribethepurposeofeachnon-manualelement.Theresultswerecomplicated.Asingleheadmovementcanindicatetheemotionofastatement,orasignersfeelingstowardaquestion.Bodylanguageisalwaysimportant,butinsignlanguage,itcanchangetheentiremeaningofasentence!
