Thefour-leggedwhaleiscalledPeregocetuspacificus.Itmeans“thetravellingwhalethatreachedthePacificOcean”inLatin.Itwasanancestorofwhalesthatwereamphibious(两栖的)—theyhadtheabilitytolivebothonlandandinwater.

Thefossilsshowthatthefirstsuchanimalsappearedabout50millionyearsago.TheylivedinsomeareasmakingupIndiaandPakistanatpresent.Theanimalswereaboutfourmeterslong.Theywereabletocarrytheirownweightandcouldwalkonland.

ScientistsbelievethePeregocetusspentmostofitstimeinthewater,butmighthaveclimbedontotherockycoasttorestorgivebirth.Thefossilsshowthattheanimal’shandsandfeethadsmallhooves(蹄)andtheirtoeswereconnectedtohelpwithswimming.
