Hisfirstliterarywork,adetectivestory,waspublishedinaschoolnewspaperwhenhewas12.Whenhewas16,hewasforcedtoleaveSt.PaulAcademyforneglectinghisstudies.HeattendedNewmanSchool,aprepschoolinHackensack,NewJersey,in1911–1912,andenteredPrincetonUniversityin1913asamemberoftheClassof1917.TherehebecamefriendswithfuturecriticsandwritersEdmundWilson（Classof1916）andJohnPealeBishop（Classof1917）,andwroteforthePrincetonTriangleClub.HewasalsoamemberoftheUniversityCottageClub,whichstilldisplaysFitzgerald’sdeskandwritingmaterialsinitslibrary.Apoorstudent,FitzgeraldleftPrincetontoenlist（入伍）intheUSArmyduringWorldWarI;however,thewarendedshortlyafterFitzgerald’senlistment.
