ForgetprecedentsliketheManhattanProject,whichdevelopedtheatombomb,ortheApolloprogramthatputmenonthemoon—single-focusprogramsboth,howeverhardtheyweretopulloff.ThinkinsteadoftheovernightconversionoftheWorldWarII-eraindustrialsectorintoavastmachinecapableofchurningout60,000tanksand300,000planes,aneffortthatnotonlydidn'tbankruptthenationbutinsteadmadeitrichandpowerfulbeyonditsimaginingand—oh,yes—wonthewarintheprocess.
