FatherofHybridRice—YuanLongping

YuanLongping，afamousChineseagriculturalist，wasborninBeijingin1930.ProfessorYuangraduatedfromSouthwestAgricultureCollegein1953andhasdevotedhimselftoagriculturaleducationandresearchsincethen.ProfessorYuanwasapioneerinhybridriceresearchandmaderemarkableachievementsinthisarea.TheachievementsofYuanLongpinggreatlysolvedthefoodshortage，andprovidedasolutiontotheworldwidestarvation.ItisregardedasthefifthinventionafterChina’sFourMajorInventions，andisacclaimedastheSecondGreenRevolution.Asaresult，hewasawardedwithmanyinternationalawards.

YuanLongpingstartedtheresearchofhybridricein1964.Healwayscarriedoutexperimentsonthefarmlands，andmadeabreakthroughin1973.ThenewtechnologywastestedinmanyareasofSouthChinain1974and1975，andthenextendedtootherareas.Chinabecamethefirstcountrythatisabletoproducehybridrice.YuanLongpingisthefirstscientistwhosuccessfullychangedtheselfpollinatingcharacteristicofriceandrealizedlargescalefarmingofhybridrice.Thisearnedhimthetitle“FatherofHybridRice”．

HispioneeringworkinhybridricebreedingandproductiontechniqueshasrevolutionizedricecultivationinChina，establishingChina’sworldleadingpositioninhybridriceresearch.From1976to1978，thetotalcultivatedareaofthehybridricedevelopedbyYuanreached1.1billionmu（15mu＝1hectares），andincreasedriceoutputby100billionkg.Atpresent，thehybridricedevelopedbyYuanisplantedonthefarmlandsalloverChina，whichplaysanimportantroleinincreasingChina’sgrainproduction.Itmakesitpossibletofeed22%oftheworldpopulationononly7%oftheworld’stotalarableland.

杂交水稻之父——袁隆平

中国著名的农学家袁隆平1930年出生于北京，1953年毕业于西南农学院，从那时起便投身于农业教育和研究中。

袁教授是杂交水稻研究方面的先驱，并在这一领域取得了突出的成就。

袁隆平教授的成就极大地解决了粮食短缺问题，为世界的饥饿问题提供了解决办法。

此项成就被认为是中国四大发明之后的第五大发明，并被赞誉为“第二次绿色革命”。

因此，他获得了许多国际性的大奖。

袁隆平1964年开始杂交水稻的研究。

他总是在农田地头进行实验，并在1973年取得了突破。

在1974年和1975年，这项新技术在华南的许多地区展开了测试，然后又推广到其他地区。

中国从而成为第一个能够生产杂交水稻的国家。

袁隆平也成为第一个成功改变水稻自花传粉特性以及实现大规模种植杂交水稻的科学家。

这为他赢得了“杂交水稻之父”的头衔。

他在杂交水稻培育和生产技术方面的前瞻性工作使中国的水稻栽培取得了革命性的变革，确立了中国在杂交水稻研究方面的领先位置。

从1976年到1978年，袁隆平培育的杂交水稻种植面积达到11亿亩（15亩＝1公顷），大米产量增加了1,000亿公斤。

目前，袁隆平培育的杂交水稻在中国的稻田里得到广泛种植，为提高中国谷物的产量起到了重要作用。

这使得依靠只占世界7%的可耕种土地，就能够养活22%的世界人口成为可能。
