In2000,thetotalpopulationofmountaingorillaswasonly320.Thelownumberwasaresultofillegalhunting,habitatloss,anddiseases.Sincethen,thenumberhasrisen,butslowly.

MountaingorillasliveinRwanda,Uganda,andDemocraticRepublicoftheCongo-allcountriesincentralAfrica.Toensuremoreprotectionandcare,morethanhalfoftheexistingpopulationlivesinanationalpark.BwindiImpenetrableNationalPark,locatedinsouthwesternUganda,ishometo500mountaingorillas.Theyhaveformed36socialgroupsandareledby16malegorillas.Tenofthesegroupshavebecomeusedtohumansresearchandtourism.
