LiaoningProvince,oftencalled'theGoldenTriangle'becauseofitssuperiorgeographicallocation,includesboundariesontheYellowSea,theBohaiGulf,andtheYaluRiver,whichmakesLiaoningtheclosestgatewaytotheKoreanPeninsula.AsthesouthernmostprovinceofthethreeprovincesinnortheastChina,LiaoningProvince'sproximitytotheseahasgivenitcommercialandstrategicadvantagesthroughoutitshistory.

History

ArcheologicalevidenceestablishesthatcommunitylifeexistedinLiaoning5,000yearsago.Fromitsearlybeginningsthroughtothemid-20thCentury,Liaoninghasbeensoughtafterasanimportanttradecenter,anareathatcontainsrich,untappedresources,andforitsstrategicpositionastheGoldenTriangle.LiaoninghasbeenthebirthplaceofwarlordsandthecradleoftheQingDynasty.Lastingfrom1644tothe1911Revolution,thisfeudaldynastywassetupbyinvadingManchus.Unfortunately,theManchuswerenotthelastpeopletoinvadethisarea.Liaoning'softentroubledhistoryhasgivenusaninterestinglegacyofarchitectureandartifacts,aswellasarcheologicaltreasures,whichcombinedwithitstranscendentnaturalbeauty,makesLiaoningProvinceanareayouwillwanttovisitmanytimes.Belowareafewhighlights.

InShenyang,Liaoning'scapitalcity,thereisaManchuversionoftheForbiddenCityknownastheShenyangImperialPalace.BuiltonthesameprinciplesastheForbiddenCityinBeijing,althoughmuchsmallerinscope,itwascompletedbyHuangTaijiin1636.SecondonlytotheForbiddenCity,itisthemostintactimperialbuildinginexistenceinChina.TheImperialPalaceisamuseumthatfeaturesextensiveexhibitsofjade,ivory,artworksofMingandQingdynasties（includingpaintings,sculpture,enamelsandceramics）,musicalinstruments,andalargedisplayof17thand18thCenturiesmilitaryequipment.Itwasinthispalacein1644thatShunzhibecameEmperorbeforehecrossedtheGreatWalltoinvadeChina.

TheemperorsthatbuilttheImperialPalacealsobuilttheirburialsitesinShenyang:

FulingTombalsocalledtheEastTomb;andZhaolingTomb,alsocalledtheNorthTomb.EmperorNurhachiandhismistressareburiedinFulingTomb.Nurhachi'sson,HuangTaiji（thefatherofEmperorShunzhi）andhisempressareburiedinZhaoling.ThelargeandbeautifulZhaolingtombhasbeencomparedtotheMingTombsinBeijingandislocatedintheenormousBeilingPark.Athirdtomb,YonglingTomb,completesthefamoustombgroupknownasthe'threetombsoutsideoftheGreatWall'.

Insomeveryancienttime,afairygoddessdecidedtobringspringtoEarthbyembroideringcloudsonlotusleaves.Duringafightwiththegodswhoweretryingtostopher,thebeautifulcloudembroideredleavesfelltoearthatShenyangandbecamegreenhillsthatthepeoplenamedQianlianshan（ThousandLotusesMountain）.ThismountainisnowknownasQianshan.Peoplelovetocomeheretowalkalongthesplendidtrailstoitsloftypeaksandancienttemples.AwalkaroundQianshancangiveyouthememoryofaperfectday.

SoutheastofShenyangisBenxi,whichhasthelargestwatercaveinAsia.Within45squarekilometers（17squaremiles）ofBenxiWaterCaveNationalPark,therearesixareasofparticularinterest:

MountMiaohou,MountTiecha,MountGuanmen,theSpaTemple,TanggouValley,andtheWaterCave.TheWaterCavehasanundergroundriverwithwatersoclearthattheriverbedisalwaysvisible.Takearideonthesightseeingboatandenterintothemagicandmysteryofthestalactiteformationsthathaveformedovermillionsofyears.ItiscommontoseeartistsatthevariousmountainsandTanggouValleydrawingandpaintingthemountainsandtheinnumerableflowersandtreesthatarenurturedbythemountainstreams.BenxiWaterCaveNationalParkisauniquewonderlandofpastoralbeautythathascapturedtheimaginesandheartsofitsvisitorsthroughouttheages.

SurroundedonthreesidesbytheYellowSea,Dalianisacharmingcoastalcitythathasbecomeapopularresorttown.Thisishardlysurprisingwhenyouexperiencethegarden-likedowntownstreetsthatareborderedbyJapaneseandRussianstylebuildings,allofwhichprovidetheperfectbackdropforaleisurelystroll.Withmountainsononeside,andfabulousbathingbeachesallaroundthecity,Dalianisagreatplacetoescapethesummerheat,havearefreshingvacation,andenjoythefeelingofromancethatisintheair.
