YorkshireinEnglandwasthesettingfortwogreatnovelsofthe19thcentury.ThesewereCharlotteBronte'sJaneEyreandEmilyBronte'sWutheringHeights.Theyoungestsister,Anne,wasalsoagiftednovelist,andherbookshavethesameextraordinaryqualityashersisters'.
TheirfatherwasPatrickBronte,borninIreland.Hemovedwithhiswife,MariaBronte,andtheirsixsmallchildrentoHaworthinYorkshirein1820.Soonafter,Mrs.Bronteandthetwoeldestchildrendied,leavingthefathertocarefortheremainingthreegirlsandaboy.
Charlottewasbornin1816.Emilywasbornin1818andAnnein1820.TheirbrotherBranwellwasbornin1817.Lefttothemselves,thechildrenwroteandtoldstoriesandwalkedoverthehills.Theygrewuplargelyselfeducated.Branwellshowedagreatinterestindrawing.Thegirlsweredeterminedtoearnmoneyforhisarteducation.Theytookpositionsasteachersortaughtchildrenintheirhomes.
Aschildrentheyhadallwrittenmanystories.Charlotte,asayounggirl,alonewrote22books,eachwith60to100pagesofsmallhandwriting.Therefore,theyturnedtowritingforincome.By1847,CharlottehadwrittenTheProfessor;Emily,WutheringHeights;andAnne,AgnesGrey.AftermuchdifficultyAnneandEmilyfoundapublisher,buttherewasnointerestshowninCharlotte'sbook.(Itwasnotpublisheduntil1859.)However,onepublisherexpressedaninterestinseeingmoreofherwork.JaneEyrewasalreadystarted,andshehurriedlyfinishedit.Itwasacceptedatonce;thuseachofthesistershadabookpublishedin1847.
JaneEyrewasimmediatelysuccessful;theothertwo,however,didnotdosowell.PeopledidnotlikeWutheringHeights.Theysaiditwastoowild,tooanimallike.ButgraduallyitcametobeconsideredoneofthefinestnovelsintheEnglishlanguage.EmilylivedonlyashortwhileafterthepublicationofthebookandAnnediedin1849.
