OnJuly4,1884,thepeopleofFrancegavetotheUnitedStatesasasymboloffriendship,astatuesculpturedbyFredericAugusteBartholdi.ThisstatuewasplacedonanislandinNewYorkHarbor.Itis46metershighandisthefirstsightimmigrantsseeastheycomeintoNewYorkCitybyship.ItisknownastheStatueofLiberty.OnthestatueisapoemwrittenbyEmmaLazarus.ThispoemsumsuptheAmericantraditionofacceptingpeoplefromothercountries.Itfollows:
