OutdoorClassroomDay,takingplaceon17thMayand1stNovemberthisyear,willseeschoolsaroundtheworldswaptheinsidefortheoutsideandtakelearningintotheplaygroundandbeyondtomakeplaytimeakeypartoftheschoolday.Thismightinvolveusingnaturalobjectslikestonestodosums,orgoingonaninsecthunttoencouragecuriosity.Bynow,OutdoorClassroomDayhasgrownfromagrassrootsmovementtoaglobalcampaignthatisexpectedtobenefitfivemillionchildrenandover40,000schoolsfromallaroundtheworldin2018.

Thisishelpingtochangethetrendthatseesmanyschoolssellinguporbuildingontheirplaygroundsandcuttingbackonplaytimetomakemoreroomforacademicstudies,whileathomechildren’slivesareincreasinglyfilledwithorganizedactivitiesintendedtohelpthemlearn.Todayglobally61%ofparentssurveyedintheDirtisGoodQualitativeStudysaidthatchildrendon’tknowhowtoplaywithoutusingtechnology.

OutdoorClassroomDayismakingplayingtimehappen,with22%ofparticipatingschoolshavingincreasedtheirplaytimesincejoiningthecampaign.93%ofteacherssurveyedsawimprovementsinchildren’screativityafterplayingoutside,and97%believethattimeoutdoorsisnecessaryforchildrentoreachtheirfullpotential.

Initialsurveysin2003andin2007foundtwosmallpopulationsofthesoftshellturtlesalonga30-milestretch(水域)oftheMekongRiver.Sincethen,conservationgroupshaveworkedwithlocalcommunitiesandofficialstoincreasethewildpopulationoftheseendangeredturtles,includingaprogramtohireformereggcollectorstohelpsearchforandprotectnestsinsteadofharvestingtheeggs.

Forthelastdecade,WCS,ConservationInternational,theTurtleSurvivalAllianceandlocalgroupshaveworkedtoprotectturtlenests.Theirgoalistoensureeggswillmultiplyandhatch,andthatbabyturtlesgrowstrongenoughtoeventuallytakecareofthemselvesinthewild.
