Thepurportede-mailsofdozensofSyrianofficialsaswellastheiraccountpasswordswerereleasedSundaybyAnonymoushackers,whoclaimtohaveattackedthewebmailserveroftheMinistryofPresidentialAffairs.

CNN,whichhasseenthee-mailsinquestion,cannotindependentlyconfirmtheauthenticityofthematerial.AtelephonecalltotheSyrianMissionattheUnitedNationsseekingcommentwasnotimmediatelyreturned.

Amongthee-mailcorrespondenceAnonymouspostedwasanexchangebetweenSheherazadJa'afari,Syria'spressattachéattheUnitedNations,tooneofal-Assad'saidesinDamascus.

Inthee-mail,sheadvisesthatal-AssadavoiddiscussinghisproposedreformsinaninterviewwithABC'sBarbaraWalters.

"Don'ttalkreform.American'swon'tcare,orunderstandthat,"thee-mailsaid.

Rather,itadvisestheSyrianpresidenttotalkaboutmistakesandblamehisownpolice

"Americanpsychecanbeeasilymanipulatedwhentheyhearthatthereare'mistakes'doneandnowweare'fixingit,'"thee-mailssaid.

Duringal-Assad'sinterviewonABCinDecember,hedescribedsomeofthereportsofviolenceas"individualmistakes."

WhenaskedbyWalterswhowasresponsibleforthemistakes,al-Assadresponded:

"Wedon'tknoweverything.Insomecases,donebythepolice.Insomecases,donebycivilians."

Thee-mailsgoontoencourageal-Assadtosay"Syriadoesn'thaveapolicytotorturepeople,"andcontrastitwiththeactionsofU.S.soldiersatIraq'snotoriousAbuGhraibprison.

Additionally,anemaildescribeshowal-Assad--referredtointheexchangesasH.E.forHisExcellency--isviewedbyAmericans.

"Atonepoint,H.E.wasviewedasaheroandinothertimesH.E.wasthe'badguy.'Americanslovethesekindsofthingsandgetconvincedbyit,"thee-mailsaid.

Whileal-Assad'sinterviewmayhavebeenviewedasanopportunitytoexplaintheactionsinsideSyria,henolongerisinterestedintryingtowinovertheUnitedStates,saidDavidKenneratForeignPolicymagazine.

"Honestly,Ithinkatthispoint,theythinktheyhavelosttheWesternmedia.They'velosttheUnitedStates,"Kennersaid.

"Atthispoint,theSyriangovernmentismoreinterestedinwinningpublicopinionandgovernmentsupportinRussianandIran."
