OnbehalfofthegreatstateofIllinois,crossroadsofanation,landofLincoln,letmeexpressmydeepgratitudefortheprivilegeofaddressingthisconvention.Tonightisaparticularhonorformebecause,let'sfaceit,mypresenceonthisstageisprettyunlikely.Myfatherwasaforeignstudent,bornandraisedinasmallvillageinKenya.Hegrewupherdinggoats,wenttoschoolinatin-roofshack.Hisfather,mygrandfather,wasacook,adomesticservant.

Butmygrandfatherhadlargerdreamsforhisson.Throughhardworkandperseverancemyfathergotascholarshiptostudyinamagicalplace:

America,whichstoodasabeaconoffreedomandopportunitytosomanywhohadcomebefore.Whilestudyinghere,myfathermetmymother.Shewasborninatownontheothersideoftheworld,inKansas.HerfatherworkedonoilrigsandfarmsthroughmostoftheDepression.ThedayafterPearlHarborhesignedupforduty,joinedPatton'sarmyandmarchedacrossEurope.Backhome,mygrandmotherraisedtheirbabyandwenttoworkonabomberassemblyline.Afterthewar,theystudiedontheGIBill,boughtahousethroughFHA,andmovedwestinsearchofopportunity.

Andthey,too,hadbigdreamsfortheirdaughter,acommondream,bornoftwocontinents.Myparentssharednotonlyanimprobablelove;theysharedanabidingfaithinthepossibilitiesofthisnation.TheywouldgivemeanAfricanname,Barack,or"blessed,"believingthatinatolerantAmericayournameisnobarriertosuccess.Theyimaginedmegoingtothebestschoolsintheland,eventhoughtheyweren'trich,becauseinagenerousAmericayoudon'thavetoberichtoachieveyourpotential.Theyarebothpassedawaynow.Yet,Iknowthat,onthisnight,theylookdownonmewithpride.

Istandheretoday,gratefulforthediversityofmyheritage,awarethatmyparents'dreamsliveoninmypreciousdaughters.IstandhereknowingthatmystoryispartofthelargerAmericanstory,thatIoweadebttoallofthosewhocamebeforeme,andthat,innoothercountryonearth,ismystoryevenpossible.Tonight,wegathertoaffirmthegreatnessofournation,notbecauseoftheheightofourskyscrapers,orthepowerofourmilitary,orthesizeofoureconomy.Ourprideisbasedonaverysimplepremise,summedupinadeclarationmadeovertwohundredyearsago,"Weholdthesetruthstoheself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal.ThattheyareendowedbytheirCreatorwithcertaininalienablerights.Thatamongthesearelife,libertyandthepursuitofhappiness."

ThatisthetruegeniusofAmerica,afaithinthesimpledreamsofitspeople,theinsistenceonsmallmiracles.Thatwecantuckinourchildrenatnightandknowtheyarefedandclothedandsafefromharm.Thatwecansaywhatwethink,writewhatwethink,withouthearingasuddenknockonthedoor.Thatwecanhaveanideaandstartourownbusinesswithoutpayingabribeorhiringsomebody'sson.Thatwecanparticipateinthepoliticalprocesswithoutfearofretribution,andthatourvoteswillhecounted-oratleast,mostofthetime.

Thisyear,inthiselection,wearecalledtoreaffirmourvaluesandcommitments,toholdthemagainstahardrealityandseehowwearemeasuringup,tothelegacyofourforbearers,andthepromiseoffuturegenerations.AndfellowAmericans-Democrats,Republicans,Independents-Isaytoyoutonight:

wehavemoreworktodo.MoretodofortheworkersImetinGale□□urg,Illinois,whoarelosingtheirunionjobsattheMaytagplantthat'smovingtoMexico,andnowarehavingtocompetewiththeirownchildrenforjobsthatpaysevenbucksanhour.MoretodoforthefatherImetwhowaslosinghisjobandchokingbacktears,wonderinghowhewouldpay$4,500amonthforthedrugshissonneedswithoutthehealthbenefitshecountedon.MoretodofortheyoungwomaninEastSt.Louis,andthousandsmorelikeher,whohasthegrades,hasthedrive,hasthewill,butdoesn'thavethemoneytogotocollege.

Don'tgetmewrong.ThepeopleImeetinsmalltownsandbigcities,indinersandofficeparks,theydon'texpectgovernmenttosolvealltheirproblems.Theyknowtheyhavetoworkhardtogetaheadandtheywantto.GointothecollarcountiesaroundChicago,andpeoplewilltellyoutheydon'twanttheirtaxmoneywastedbyawelfareagencyorthePentagon.Gointoanyinnercityneighborhood,andfolkswilltellyouthatgovernmentalonecan'tteachkidstolearn.Theyknowthatparentshavetoparent,thatchildrencan'tachieveunlessweraisetheirexpectationsandturnoffthetelevisionsetsanderadicatetheslanderthatsaysablackyouthwithabookisactingwhite.No,peopledon'texpectgovernmenttosolvealltheirproblems.Buttheysense,deepintheirbones,thatwithjustachangeinpriorities,wecanmakesurethateverychildinAmericahasadecentshotatlife,andthatthedoorsofopportunityremainopentoall.Theyknowwecandobetter.Andtheywantthatchoice.

Inthiselection,weofferthatchoice.Ourpartyhaschosenamantoleaduswhoembodiesthebestthiscountryhastooffer.ThatmanisJohnKerry.JohnKerryunderstandstheidealsofcommunity,faith,andsacrifice,becausethey'vedefinedhislife.FromhisheroicserviceinVietnamtohisyearsasprosecutorandlieutenantgovernor,throughtwodecadesintheUnitedStatesSenate,hehasdevotedhimselftothiscountry.Againandagain,we'veseenhimmaketoughchoiceswheneasieroneswereavailable.Hisvaluesandhisrecordaffirmwhatisbestinus.

JohnKerrybelievesinanAmericawherehardworkisrewarded.Soinsteadofofferingtaxbreakstocompaniesshippingjobsoverseas,he'llofferthemtocompaniescreatingjobshereathome.JohnKerrybelievesinanAmericawhereallAmericanscanaffordthesamehealthcoverageourpoliticiansinWashingtonhaveforthemselves.JohnKerrybelievesinenergyindependence,sowearen'theldhostagetotheprofitsofoilcompaniesorthesabotageofforeignoilfields.JohnKerrybelievesintheconstitutionalfreedomsthathavemadeourcountrytheenvyoftheworld,andhewillneversacrificeourbasiclibertiesnorusefaithasawedgetodivideus.AndJohnKerrybelievesthatinadangerousworld,warmustbeanoption,butitshouldneverhethefirstoption.

Awhileback,ImetayoungmannamedShamusattheVFWHallinEastMoline,Illinois.Hewasagood-lookingkid,six-twoorsix-three,clear-eyed,withaneasysmile.Hetoldmehe'djoinedtheMarinesandwasheadingtoIraqthefollowingweek.AsIlistenedtohimexplainwhyhe'denlisted,hisabsolutefaithinourcountryanditsleaders,hisdevotiontodutyandservice,Ithoughtthisyoungmanwasallanyofusmighthopeforinachild.ButthenIaskedmyself:

AreweservingShamusaswellashewasservingus?

Ithoughtofmorethan900servicemenandwomen,sonsanddaughters,hu□□andsandwives,friendsandneighbors,whowillnotbereturningtotheirhometowns.IthoughtoffamiliesIhadmetwhowerestrugglingtogetbywithoutalovedone'sfullincome,orwhoselovedoneshadreturnedwithalimbmissingorwithnervesshattered,butwhostilllackedlong-termhealthbenefitsbecausetheywerereservists.Whenwesendouryoungmenandwomenintoharm'sway,wehaveasolemnobligationnottofudgethenumbersorshadethetruthaboutwhythey'regoing,tocarefortheirfamilieswhilethey'regone,totendtothesoldiersupontheirreturn,andtoneverevergotowarwithoutenoughtroopstowinthewar,securethepeace,andearntherespectoftheworld.

Nowletmebeclear.Wehaverealenemiesintheworld.Theseenemiesmustbefound.Theymustbepursuedandtheymustbedefeated.JohnKerryknowsthis.AndjustasLieutenantKerrydidnothesitatetoriskhislifetoprotectthemenwhoservedwithhiminVietnam,PresidentKerrywillnothesitateonemomenttouseourmilitarymighttokeepAmericasafeandsecure.JohnKerrybelievesinAmerica.Andheknowsit'snotenoughforjustsomeofustoprosper.Foralongsideourfamousindividualism,there'sanotheringredientintheAmericansaga.

Abeliefthatweareconnectedasonepeople.Ifthere'sachildonthesouthsideofChicagowhocan'tread,thatmatterstome,evenifit'snotmychild.Ifthere'saseniorcitizensomewherewhocan'tpayforherprescriptionandhastochoosebetweenmedicineandtherent,thatmakesmylifepoorer,evenifit'snotmygrandmother.Ifthere'sanArabAmericanfamilybeingroundedupwithoutbenefitofanattorneyordueprocess,thatthreatensmycivilliberties.It'sthatfundamentalbelief-Iammybrother'skeeper,Iammysister'skeeper-thatmakesthiscountrywork.It'swhatallowsustopursueourindividualdreams,yetstillcometogetherasasingleAmericanfamily."Epluribusunum."Outofmany,one.

Yetevenaswespeak,therearethosewhoarepreparingtodivideus,thespinmastersandnegativeadpeddlerswhoembracethepoliticsofanythinggoes.Well,Isaytothemtonight,there'snotaliberalAmericaandaconservativeAmerica-there'stheUnitedStatesofAmerica.There'snotablackAmericaandwhiteAmericaandLatinoAmericaandAsianAmerica;there'stheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Thepunditsliketoslice-and-diceourcountryintoRedStatesandBlueStates;RedStatesforRepublicans,BlueStatesforDemocrats.ButI'vegotnewsforthem,too.WeworshipanawesomeGodintheBlueStates,andwedon'tlikefederalagentspokingaroundourlibrariesintheRedStates.WecoachLittleLeagueintheBlueStatesandhavegayfriendsintheRedStates.TherearepatriotswhoopposedthewarinIraqandpatr
