Somesnailslivedonajuicycabbage.Theymovedgentlyaround,carryingtheirhousesfromleaftoleaf,insearchofatenderspottonibbleon.

  Onedayalittlesnailsaidtohisfather,“WhenIgrowupIwanttohavethebiggesthouseintheworld.”

  “Thatissilly,”saidhisfather,whohappenedtobethewisestsnailonthecabbage.“Somethingsarebettersmall.”Andhetoldthisstory.

  ONCEuponatime,alittlesnail,justlikeyou,saidtohisfather,“WhenIgrowupIwanttohavethebiggesthouseintheworld.”

  “Somethingsarebettersmall”,saidhisfather.“Keepyourhouselightandeasytocarry.”

 Butthelittlesnailwouldnotlisten,andhiddenintheshadeofalargecabbageleaf,hetwistedandtwitched,thiswayandthat,untilhediscoveredhowtomakehishousegrow.

  Itgrewandgrew,andthesnailsonthecabbagesaid,“Yousurelyhavethebiggesthouseintheworld.”

  Thelittlesnailkeptontwistingandtwitchinguntilhishousewasasbigasamelon.Then,bymovinghistailswiftlyfromlefttoright,helearnedtogrowlargepointedbulges.Andbysqueezingandpushing,andbywishingveryhard,hewasabletoaddbrightcolorsandbeautifuldesigns. 

  Nowheknewthathiswasthebiggestandthemostbeautifulhouseinthewholeworld.Hewasproudandhappy.

  Aswarmofbutterfliesflewoverhead.

   “Look!

”oneofthemsaid.“Acathedral!

  “No”,saidanother,“it’sacircus!
