“Healthycoralreefsareremarkablynoisyplaces-thecrackleofsnappingshrimpandthewhoopoffishcombinetoformabiologicalsoundscape.Youngfishhomeinonthesesoundswhenthey’relookingforaplacetosettle,”saidProfessorSteveSimpsonattheUniversityofExeter.

Reefsbecomequietwhentheyaredegraded(退化),astheshrimpsandfishdisappear.“Byusingloudspeakerstorestorethislostsoundscape,wecanattractyoungfishbackagain,”Simpsonadded.“Fisharecrucialforcoralreefstofunctionashealthyecosystems…Boostingfishpopulationsinthiswaycouldhelpkick-startnaturalrecoveryprocesses,counteracting(抵消)thedamagewe'reseeingonmanycoralreefsaroundtheworld,"hesaid.

Despitethisgroundbreakingdiscovery,westillhaveourworkcutoutforthepreservationofcoralreefs.Theaveragewatertemperaturesarerising,andproblemssuchasoverfishingandpollutionarestillamongthepressingissuesathand.Also,furtherresearchisstillneededtounderstandhowloudspeakersinfluencethebehaviorofaquatic(水中)creaturesfully.
