Sellingimperfectproduceisstillrelativelyrarerightnow,whichcanbepartiallyduetoasupplyissueratherthanalackofwillingparticipants.Raley’sSupermarkets,aSacramento-basedgrocerychain,startedanuglyfoodpilotprogramcalled“RealGood,”butdiscontinueditafter90days,sayingtheyhadsomechallengeswhensourcingtheproduce.Agrowermighthavelargeamountsofuglyproduceoneyearduetotheterribleweather,butmuchlessthenextyeariftheweatherhasbeenideal.Harvestsconstantlyvaryandretailersaremorelikelytobuyuglyproduceinlargenumbersratherthanjustafewpoundsatatime.
