AnothersimilarcaseisaVirginialawstudentwhoneededtreatmentforthespotteddarkeningonherleg.Dr.KimberleySalkey,whotreatedtheyoungwoman,learnedthestudentspentaboutsixhoursadayworkingwithhercomputerplacedonherlap.AsDr.Salkeylaterlearnt,thetemperatureunderthelaptopcouldreach51degrees.Thatcase,from2007,isoneof10laptop-relatedcasesreportedinmedicaljournalsinthepastsixyears.

Theconditioncanalsobecausedbyoveruseofheatingpads(垫子)andotherheatsourcesthatusuallyaren’thotenoughtocauseburns.It’sgenerallyharmlessbutcanalsocausesuchpermanent(永久的)skindarkening.Inveryrarecases,itcancausedamageleadingtoskincancers,saidtheSwissresearchers,Drs.AndreasArnoldandPeterItinfromUniversityHospitalBasel.Theydonotmentionanyskincancercaseslinkedtolaptopuse,butsuggest,tobesafe,placingacarryingcaseunderthelaptopifyouhavetoholditonyourlap.

Dr.KimberleySalkeysaidthatunderthemicroscope,theaffectedskinissimilartoskindamagedbylong-termsunexposure.
