NEWYORK(Reuters)—TheaveragenumberofmonthlyvisitorstoU.S.newspaperwebsitesrosebynearlyathirdinthefirsthalfof2006,astudyreleasedonWednesdaysaid,thoughprintreadershipatsomelargerpapersfell.
Thestudy,releasedbytheNewspaperAssociationofAmerica,underlinestheinternet'simportancetopapersbeset(围困)byfailingcirculationandadvertisingincomeintheirprinteditions.
Theaveragenumberofuniquevisitorstoonlinenewspapersitesinthefirsthalfwasmorethan55.5millionamonth,thestudysaid.Thatcompareswith42.2millionayearearlier.“Newspaperwebsiteshavebecomeasignificantadditiontotheprintproduct,andaredrivinglargeaudiencegrowth,”saidJohnKimball9theassociation’schiefmarketingofficer.Thenumberofpageviewsatnewspapersitesrosebyabout52percentinthefirsthalf,theassociationadded.
USNewspaperpublishershavebeenfightingtoholdontoadvertisersasmanyofthemlosereaderstoothermedia,includingtheInternet,

TheWashingtonPost,swebsiteincreaseditsaudiencereachamongreadersaged25to34bymorethan60percent,thereportsaid.Audiencereach^combinestheaverageweeklyprintaudienceandthenet30-daywebsiteaudience.
Overall,newspaperwebsiteshelpeddrivea15percentincreaseinthetotalnewspaperaudiencefor25-to-34-yearoldsanda10-percentincreasefor18-to24-yearolds,theassociationsaid.
Itdidnotprovidecomparisonstothesameperiodlastyearfortotalprintnewspaperreadership.Readershipnumbers,whichwereprovidedbyScarboroughResearch,includecirculation,sharedcopiesandanyotherwaythatsomeonecouldendupreadinganewspaper.
