HemingwaywasborninIllinoisStatenearChicago.Hisfatherwasadoctor.HetookHemingwaytoworksometimes.HeoftenmadelittleHemingwaytakeinterestedinfishingandhunting.Hismotherwasamusiclover.Shelovedsinginganddrawingwhenshewasveryyoung.

THEDAYBEFORE
Santiago,the“old-man,”hasgoneeighty-fourdayswithoutcatchingafish.He’sawidowerandthere’snomentionofanychildrenofhisown.Hehasonly“theboy,“Manolin,ascompanionandgenuinefriend.ManolinhadbeenSantiago’sapprentice,buttheboy’sparentshavemadehimworkonanotherfishingboatbecauseSantiagohas“badluck.”Buthe’sstillloyaltoSantiagoandhelpstheoldmanprepareforanattempttocatch“thebigone.”
THEFIRSTDAY
SantiagorowshisskiffoutfromtheHavanaharborfarbeyondnormalfishingwaters,hopingtoendhisstringofbadluckwithareallyhugecatch.Hesetshislinesandreadsthesignsofthesea,findingthemfavorable.
