Recently,a1935letterinwhichErnestHemingwaydetailedhiscatchofa500lbbluemarlin(青枪鱼),anadventurethatisbelievedtohavepartlyinspiredhisnovelTheOldManandtheSea,hasbeensoldfor$28,000(£22,000).

NateDSanders,theauction(拍卖)companywhichsoldtheletter,saiditdocumentedforthefirsttimeinHemingway’sownwordsnotonlythesizeofthemarlin,butalsotheattackbysharks,reflectingtheplotofthenovel.

Threeyearslater,HemingwaytoldhiseditorMaxPerkinsthathewasplanningashortstoryabouttheoldcommercialfishermanwhofoughttheswordfishallaloneinhissailingboat.Instead,heendedupwritingForWhomtheBellTolls,notreturningtothestoryabouttheoldfishermanuntilJanuary1951.ItwonhimthePulitzerin1953,andwasspecificallycitedwhenhewasawardedtheNobelPrizein1954.

UniversityofPennsylvaniaresearcherssaythatforthefirsttimetheyhavelinkedsocialmediausetoincreasesindepressionandloneliness.Theideathatsocialmediaisanythingbutsocialwhenitcomestomentalhealthhasbeentalkedaboutforyears,butnotmanystudieshavemanagedtoactuallylinkthetwo.Todothat,Pennresearchers,ledbypsychologistMelissaHunt,designedastudythatfocusedonWeChat,SnapchatandInstagram.

Thestudywasconductedwith143participants,whobeforetheybegan,completedamoodsurveyandsentalongphotosoftheirbatteryscreens,showinghowoftentheywereusingtheirphonestoaccesssocialmedia.“Wesetouttodoamuchmorecompletestudywhichattemptstoimitatereallife.”Huntsaid.

Thestudydividedtheparticipantsintotwogroups:

Thefirstgroupwasallowedtomaintaintheirnormalsocialmediahabits.Theother,thecontrolgroup,wasrestrictedto10minutesperdayonsocialmedia.Therestrictionswereputinplaceforthreeweeksandthentheparticipantsreturnedandweretestedforoutcomessuchasfearofmissingout,anxiety,depressionandloneliness.

Theresultsshowedaveryclearlinkbetweensocialmediauseandincreasedlevelsofdepressionandloneliness.“Usinglesssocialmediathanyounormallydowouldleadtosignificantdecreasesinbothdepressionandloneliness,”Huntsaid.

SocialmediainviteswhatHuntcalls“downwardsocialcomparison.”“Whenyou’reonline,itcansometimesseemthateveryoneelseiscoolerandhavingmorefunandincludedinmorethingsandyou’releftout,”Huntsaid.Andthat’sjustgenerallydiscouraging.“Everyminuteyouspendonlineisaminuteyouarenotdoingyourworkornotmeetingafriendfordinnerorhavingadeepconversationwithyourroommate.”Andthesereallifeactivitiesaretheonesthatcanencourageself-esteemandself-worth,Huntadded.
