COLOMBO,SriLanka(AP)—Duringhisleisuretime,MahindaDasanayakapackshismotorbikewithbooksandrideshismobilelibrary—acrossmostlymuddyroadsrunningthoughtea-growingmountainareas—tounderprivilegedchildreninbackwardruralofSriLanka.

Havingwitnessedthehardshipsfacedbychildrenwhosevillageshavenolibraryfacilities,Dasanayaka,achildprotectionofficerforthegovernment,waslookingforwaystohelpthem.Thenthreeyearsago,helaunchedhisprogram,called“BookandMe”.

Hepurchasedasecond-handHondamotorbikefor30,000SriLankanrupees($162).Onhisoffdays—mostlyduringweekends—herideshismotorbike,whichisfixedwithasteelboxtoholdbooks,toruralvillagesanddistributesthereadingmaterialtochildrenfreeofcharge.

Hebegantheprogramin2017with150books—someofhisownandothersdonatedbyfriends,colleaguesandwell-wishers.Hiscollectionincludesabout3,000booksonavarietyofsubjects.Sofar,hesaid,hisprogramhasbenefitedmorethan1,500children,aswellasabout150adults.

“Iwantedtodosomethingforchildrenwhoareburdenedwithanexam-centerededucation...Andtochangethewaykidslookatsociety,tochangetheirperspectivesandbroadentheirimagination,”hesaid.

Apartfromgivingawaybooks,Dasanayakaalsospeakstothechildrenforafewminutes,usuallyunderaroadsidetree,highlightingthevalueofreading,booksandauthors.Hethenconductsadiscussiononbooksthechildrenhaveread,withtheaimofeventuallyformingreadingclubs.
