WilhelmConradRontgen,aGermanphysicist,producedanddetectedX-rays,whichearnedhimtheNobelPrizeinPhysicsin1901.

HewasborntoafamilyofaGermanbusinessmanandclothproducer.In1865,hewasunfairlyforcedtoleavehighschool.Withoutahighschooldiploma,Rontgencouldnotattenduniversity.UponhearingthathecouldentertheFederalPolytechnicInstituteinZurich,hepassedtheentranceexaminationandbeganstudiesthere.In1869,hegraduatedwithaPhD.Thenheheldpositionsasprofessorinseveraluniversities.In1888,heobtainedthephysicschairattheUniversityofWurzburg.

Inanexperimentin1895,heoccasionallyfoundastrangeunknownlight.Itturnedoutthattherewasapieceofcardboard,mysteriouslightisfromit."Butwhydoesthiscardboardproducelight"Heaskedhimselfandwasdeterminedtotestit.

Fordaysonend,heshuthimselfawayinhislaboratory,wherenothingseemedtomakesensetohimoutside,intentonthisnamelessray.Aftersevenweeksofsecretexperiments,WilhelmRontgenfoundthattheeffectiscausedbyaninvisibleraythatcanpassthroughpaperand2-3cmthickwoodandthinaluminiumsheets.Ifyouputyourhandbetweenthetubeandthescreen,youcanseethebonesinyourhand.OnDecember28,1895,heannouncedhisnewdiscovery,callingtheunknownrayX-ray.

RontgenwasmarriedtoAnnaBerthaLudwig,whowassixyearsolderthanhim,for47yearsuntilherdeathin1919.In1866theymetinZurich.Buthisfatherdidn'tapproveduetoherage.TheirmarriagebeganwithfinancialdifficultiesasfamilysupportfromRontgenhadceased.
