AstudyintheMay20issueofthejournalNatureconfirmedthattherehasbeenawarmingtrendintheworld’soceanssince1993,asthewatershaveabsorbedmuchoftheextraenergyintheplanet’satmosphere.

A2008study,forexample,saidthatawarmingofjustafewdegreesFahrenheitinAntarcticwaterscouldmakethemsuitabletosharks,whichhaven’tlivedintheareaforabout40millionyears.It’seasierforsharkstokeeptheirhighmetabolisminwarmerwaters.Ifsharksdomoveintothearea,theycouldcausedamagetotheexistingecosystemsoftheoceansaroundAntarctica.
Astudyofstarfishfoundthesetypicaloceancreaturesgrewfasterinwateratwarmertemperaturesandhighercarbondioxidelevels(anotherresultofalltheextragreenhousegasintheatmosphere)thanatnormalconditions—whichisbadnewsfortheshellfishestheyliveon.
