ChapterOneTheViewofLove

ThispartdiscussesthedifferentviewsoflovebetweenChinaandAmerica.Withtheparisonofthetwosits“Friends”and“MyOwnSwordsman”,theauthorwillanalyzethisquestioninthefollowingfourways:

theviewofchooselover,thewedding,theconjugalrelationshipandthemarriedlife.Andthenguidepeopletochoosetherightviewoflove.

1.1ThePandect

ThedifferentviewsoflovebetweenChinaandAmericatypicallyreflectthedifferentculturaltraitsofChineseandAmericanpeople.Thatis,theChinesepeoplearealwaysmeaningandconservativewhiletheAmericanpeopleareoutgoingandfancyfree.

Chinahasahistoryofover5000years,thegoldenmeanoftheConfusionschoolhasaprofoundinfluenceontheChinesepeople,ofcourse,italsodeterminestheviewoflove.ThismakestheChinesepeoplemeaningandconservative,theywouldliketohiddentheirfeelingsratherthanexpressthem.Onthecontrary,Americaisanewly-emergingnation,ithasahistoryofonly300years.TheAmericancultureisbasedontheoceancultureoftheAncientGreecetradition.ThelogicalthinkingandanalyticalthinkingofAristotlehasagreatinfluenceontheirthinkingmode.paredwiththeChinesegoldenmeanthought,theAmericanpeoplearemoreromanticandfreedom.Whattheycareaboutisthepersonalityliberation.Ontheviewoflove,theAmericanpeoplearemoreopen.Theywouldliketodoanythingtheywantfortheirlove,nomatterhowamazingitseemstobe.Wewilldwellonthisinthefollowingsections.

1.2TheViewofChooseLover

1.2.1DifferentstandardsofspouseselectioninChinaandAmerica

ChinaandAmericahavedifferentstandardsofspouseselection.InChina,whentalkingaboutthestandardofspouseselection,wewillalwayshearthefollowingquestions:

“what’syourparents’opinion?

”,“Areyoumatchedformarriage?

”“Dosehehavehousesandcars?

”“IsheaGaofushuai?

”WhileinAmerica,thesequestionsrarelymentioned.In“Friends”,thesixprotagonistsallhavechangedmanyboyfriendsorgirlfriends.Whentalkingabouttheirboyfriendsorgirlfriends,weoftenhearaboutthesedescriptivewords:

funny,sweet,smart,pretty,handsome,especiallythefirsttwowords.

Therefore,wecouldsaythatthestandardofspouseselectioninAmericaisverysimple,peoplewouldchoosetogotogetheronlyiftheyhavemoninterestsandloveeachother.ButinChina,thesituationbeesveryplicated.Whenthinkingaboutmarriage,thesameinterestsandlovearenotthedecisivefactors.Whatreallymattersareyourparents’attitudeandyourfamilybackground.Basedonhistoricalrecords,ZhaochengemperorofWeidynastyhasadescendantwhowasdismissedfromhispostjustbecausehemarriedamonpeople.(TextualResearchofLawofNineDynasty).SowecouldseethatbematchedformarriageisveryimportantinChina.Thenext,let’stake“Friends”and“MyOwnSwordsman”forexamples.

1.2.2Take“Friends”and“MyOwnSwordsman”forexamples

In“MyOwnSwordsman”,wecouldseetheinfluenceofparents’attitudeandfamilybackgroundonthemarriage.Inthefirstset,TongXiangyuwasmarriedtoamancalledMr.Mowhosheevendidn’tknow.Thisistheso-calledarrangedmarriage.Unfortunately,herhusbanddiedafewdaysaftermarriage.Intheoldtradition,widowcan’tremarrysosheevenhadnorighttolove.Inthe25setand67set,TongXiangyu’sfatherandGuoFurong’sfathercametoTongfuTaverntointervenetheirdaughter’smarriage.Thesixprotagonistsofcoursetriedtheirbesttoletthetwofathersatisfiedbecausetheyarethecrucialfactoroftheirdaughter’smarriage.Justbecauseofthis,wecouldmakeaconclusionthatloveeachotherisabsolutelyakeyfactor,butiftheparentssayno,thelovewillbeeworthlessnomatterhowdeepitis.

In“Friends”,wecouldalsoseethestandardofspouseselectioninAmericaviasomespecificexamples.Forthosewhohavewatchedthesits,IbelievethattheymusthaveadeepimpressionontheMay-DecemberrelationshipbetweenMonicaandRichard.Althoughtheiragesarenotmatch,theystillchosetomarrybecausetheyloveeachother.Itisjustsosimple.Whilethelifeaftermarriagewasnotveryhappybecausetheyhadalotofdisagreements,especiallyontheissuewhethertheyshouldhaveachildornot.Finally,theychosetodivorce.NotlikemostChinesefamilies,mostAmericansprefertochoosetodivorceratherthanstilllivetogetherreluctantly.Thisistheirstandardofspouseselection.

1.3TheWedding

1.3.1Theweddingceremony

WhentalkingabouttheChinesewedding,peoplewillalwaysbeimpressedbyitsgrandspectacle.In“MyOwnSwordsman”,thereisonlyonewedding,butthisonlyoneweddingconcludedallthefactorsofatypicalChineseweddingceremony.Theredandgrandscene,thenumerousguests,thegrandbanquet,theloudfirecrackers,everythingneededisready.Theatmosphereoftheceremonyislivelyandjazzy.paredwiththelivelyChineseweddingceremony,theAmericanweddingceremonyseemstobemorepeacefulandsolemn.Nottoomanypeoplegatheredinthechurchtoblessthenewcouples.Theceremonyisnotgrand,butwarmandalittlepoetic.“Friends”described5weddingceremonies,allofthemarewarmandsolemn,makingtheaudiencefeelfortable.EspeciallyRossandRachel’swedding.Althoughtherewasnoaudience,themoodisverywarm.Wecoulddeeplyfeelthepurityoflove.

Franklyspeaking,thisdifferencesitselfisveryinteresting.TheconservativeChinesepeoplewouldliketoholdagrandandlivelyweddingceremony.Theyactoutofnormalbehavior,showingustheothersideoftheirpersonality.Onthecontrary,thejazzyAmericanschoosetoholdapeacefulandquietweddingceremony,theyalsoshowtheothersideoftheirpersonality.Wecouldfindmanyreasonstoexplaintheoddphenomenon,suchasthereligiousbelief,thegeographicdifferences.ButIthinkthisphenomenonitselfhasbeeaculture,theweddingculture.

1.3.2Theweddingfee

ThereisanotherinterestingdifferencebetweenChineseandAmericanwedding,thatistheweddingfee.First,theguestsattendingtheweddingceremonyinChinamustpreparearedpacket(moneyinside,atleast100yuan)forthenewcouples.WhileinAmerica,theguestsusuallybringamongiftfortheweddingceremony.Second,inChina,thecoupleusuallypayfortheweddingfeetogether.Becauseoftheredpackets,therealfeetheyneedtopayisnotaverylargenumber.WhileinAmerica,theweddingfeeistotallypaidbythewife.ThisprobablywillneverhappeninChina,butinAmerica,thisisamonsense.

1.4TheConjugalRelationship

1.4.1Thepropertyrelations

InChina,thepropertyisinchargeofoneperson,usuallytheoneisthewife.In“MyOwnSwordsman”,TongXiangyuandGuFurongtookchargeofthemoney.Thisreflectstwophenomenon.Thefirst,althoughthepropertyisinchargebyoneperson,thepropertybelongstobothofthem.Itseemstobeunequal,butitperfectlyexplainstheirfirmconjugalrelationship.Thepropertytiesthetwocouplestogether.Thesecond,thefemalesaremorefrugalandcarefulthanthosecarelessmen.Theyaregoodattakingchargeofthemoney.

InAmerica,peoplealwaystakechargeoftheirmoney.What’smore,theyalwaysbuytheirownthingswiththeirownmoney.Afragmentin“Friends”wonderful
