StylisticfeaturesofBeowulf

1)ThisepiciswritteninOldEnglish.

2)ThemoststrikingdifferencebetweenOldEnglishpoetryandlaterpoetryisinthetechnicalstructure.Everylineconsistsoftwoclearlyseparatedhalflinesbetweenwhichisapause,calledacaesura,whichinLatinmeansacutting,abreakorpauseinalineofpoetry.Thetwopartsofthelineareunitedbyalliteration,whichistherepetitionofthesamesoundorsoundsatthebeginningoftwoormorewords.[Caesareanoperation/section]

3)Akindoffigurativelanguagecalledkenningisappliedinordertoaddbeautytoordinaryobjects.Akenningisametaphorusuallycomposedoftwowords,whichbecomestheformulaforaspecialobject.Forexample,“helmetbearer”standsfor“warrior,”“swanroad”for“thesea,”“theworldcandle”for“thesun,”“ring-giver”for“king,”etc.

4)Repetitionandvariation:

thesameideaisexpressedmorethanoncebytheuseofdifferentwordswhicharemoreorlesssynonyms.

Alliteration:

MiddleEnglishLiterature

Itreferstoliteratureoftheyears1100—1500,writteninLatin,French,andLondondialect(middleEnglish).
