Hi,mynameisMarryFieldingandIguessyoucouldsaythatIam"oneinamillion".Inotherwords,therearenotmanypeoplelikeme.Yousee,Ihaveamusclediseasewhichmakesmeveryweak,soIcan'trunorclimbstairsasquicklyasotherpeople.Inaddition,sometimesIamveryclumsyanddropthingsorbumpintofurniture.Unfortunately,thedoctorsdon'tknowhowtomakemebetter,butIamveryoutgoingandhavelearnedtoadapttomydisability.Mymottois:

OneproblemisthatIdon'tlookanydifferentfromotherpeople.Sosometimessomechildreninmyprimaryschoolwouldlaugh,whenIgotoutofbreathafterrunningashortwayorhadtostopandresthalfwayupthestairs.Sometimes,too,Iwastooweaktogotoschoolsomyeducationsuffered.EverytimeIreturnedafteranabsence,IfeltstupidbecauseIwasbehindtheothers.

 

Mylifeisaloteasierathighschoolbecausemyfellowstudentshaveacceptedme.Thefewwhocannotseetherealpersoninsidemybodydonotmakemeannoyed,andIjustignorethem.AllinallIhaveagoodlife.IamhappytohavefoundmanythingsIcando,likewritingandcomputerprogramming.MyambitionistoworkforafirmthatdevelopscomputersoftwarewhenIgrowup.Lastyearinventedacomputerfootballgameandabigcompanyhasdecidedtobuyitfromme.Ihaveaverybusylifewithnotimetositaroundfeelingsorryformyself.Aswell

asgoingtothemoviesandfootballmatcheswithmyfriends,Ispendalotoftimewithmypets.Ihavetworabbits,aparrot,atankfulloffishandatortoise.TolookaftermypetsproperlytakesalotoftimebutIfinditworthwhile.Ialsohavetodoalotofwork,especiallyifIhavebeenawayforawhile.

Inmanywaysmydisabilityhashelpedmegrowstrongerpsychologicallyandbecomemoreindependent.Ihavetoworkhardtoliveanormallifebutithasbeenworthit.IfIhadachancetosayonethingtohealthychildren,itwouldbethis:

havingadisabilitydoesnotmeanyourlifeisnotsatisfying.Sodon'tfeelsorryforthedisabledormakefunofthem,anddon'tignorethemeither.Justacceptthemforwhotheyare,andgivethemencouragementtoliveas

1Adequateaccessforwheelchairs.Itwouldbehandytohaveliftstoallpartsofthecinema.Thebuttonsintheliftsshouldbeeasyforapersoninawheelchairtoreach,andthedoorsbewideenoughtoenter.Insomecinemas,theliftsareatthebackofthecinemaincold,unattractiveplaces.Asdisabledpeoplehavetousethelifts,thismakesthemfeeltheyarenot

asimportantasothercustomers.

2Earphonesforpeoplewhohavetroublehearing.Itwouldhelptofitsetsofearphonestoallseats,notjusttosomeofthem.Thiswouldallowhearing-impairedcustomerstoenjoythe

companyoftheirhearingfriendsratherthanhavingtositinaspecialarea.

3Raisedseating.Peoplewhoareshortcannotalwaysseethescreen.SoI'dliketosuggestthattheseatsatthebackbeplacedhigherthanthoseatthefrontsothateveryonecanseethescreeneasily.Perhapstherecouldbeaspaceattheendofeachrowforpeopleinwheelchairstositnexttotheirfriends.

4Toilets.Fordisabledcustomersitwouldbemoreconvenienttoplacethetoiletsneartheentrancetothecinema.Itcanbedifficultiftheonlydisabledtoiletisinthebasementalongway

fromwherethefilmisshowing.Andifthedoorscouldbeopenedoutwards,disabledcustomerswouldbeveryhappy.

5Carparking.Ofcourse,thereareusuallyspacesspeciallyreservedfordisabledandelderlydrivers.Iftheyareclosetothecinemaentranceand/orexit,itiseasierfordisabledpeopleto

gettofilmincomfort.

LarryBelmontworkedforacompanythatmaderobots.Recentlyithadbegunexperimentingwithahouseholdrobot.ItwasgoingtobetestedoutbyLarry'swife,Claire.

Clairedidn'twanttherobotinherhouse,especiallyasherhusbandwouldbeabsentforthreeweeks,butLarrypersuadedherthattherobotwouldn'tharmherorallowhertobeharmed.Itwouldbeabonus.However,whenshefirstsawtherobot,shefeltalarmed.HisnamewasTonyandheseemedmorelikeahumanthanamachine.Hewastallandhandsomewithsmoothhairandadeepvoicealthoughhisfacialexpressionneverchanged.

OnthesecondmorningTony,wearinganapron,broughtherbreakfastandthenaskedherwhethersheneededhelpdressing.Shefeltembarrassedandquicklytoldhimtogo.Itwasdisturbingandfrighteningthathelookedsohuman.

Oneday,Clairementionedthatshedidn'tthinkshewasclever.Tonysaidthatshemustfeelveryunhappytosaythat.Clairethoughtitwasridiculoustobeofferedsympathybyarobot.

Butshebegantotrusthim.Shetoldhimhowshewasoverweightandthismadeherfeelunhappy.Alsoshefeltherhomewasn'telegantenoughforsomeonelikeLarrywhowantedtoimprovehissocialposition.Shewasn'tlikeGladysClaffern,oneoftherichestandmostpowerfulwomenaround.

AsafavourTonypromisedtohelpClairemakeherselfsmarterandherhomemoreelegant.SoClaireborrowedapileofbooksfromthelibraryforhimtoread,orrather,scan.Shelookedathisfingerswithwonderastheyturnedeachpageandsuddenlyreachedforhishand.

Shewasamazedbyhisfingernailsandthesoftnessandwarmthofhisskin.Howabsurd,shethought.Hewasjustamachine.

TonygaveClaireanewhaircutandchangedthemakeupshewore.Ashewasnotallowedtoaccompanyhertotheshops,hewroteoutalistofitemsforher.Clairewentintothecityandboughtcurtains,cushions,acarpetandbedding.Thenshewentintoajewelleryshoptobuyanecklace.Whentheclerkatthecounterwasrudetoher,sherangTonyupandtoldtheclerktospeaktohim.Theclerkimmediatelychangedhisattitude.ClairethankedTony,tellinghimthathewasa"dear".Assheturnedaround,therestoodGladysClaffern.Howawfultobediscoveredbyher,Clairethought.Bytheamusedandsurprisedlookonherface,ClaireknewthatGladysthoughtshewashavinganaffair.Afterall,sheknewClaire'shusband'snamewasLarry,notTony.

WhenClairegothome,sheweptwithangerinherarmchair.GladyswaseverythingClairewantedtobe."Youcanbelikeher,"TonytoldherandsuggestedthatsheinviteGladysandherfriendstothehousethenightbeforehewastoleaveandLarrywastoreturn.Bythattime,Tonyexpectedthehousetobecompletelytransformed.

Tonyworkedsteadilyontheimprovements.Clairetriedtohelponcebutwastoo

 

clumsy.ShefelloffaladderandeventhoughTonywasinthenextroom,hemanagedtocatchherintime.Heheldherfirmlyinhisarmsandshefeltthewarmthofhisbody.Shescreamed,pushedhimawayandrantoherroomfortherestoftheday.

Thenightofthepartyarrived.Theclockstruckeight.TheguestswouldbearrivingsoonandClairetoldTonytogointoanotherroom.Atthatmoment,Tonyfoldedhisarmsaroundher,bendinghisfaceclosetohers.Shecriedout"Tony"andthenheardhimdeclarethathedidn'twanttoleaveherthenextdayandthathefeltmorethanjustthedesiretopleaseher.Thenthefrontdoorbellrang.Tonyfreedheranddisappearedfromsight.ItwasthenthatClairerealizedthatTonyhadopenedthecurtainsofthefrontwindow.Herguestshadseeneverything!

ThewomenwereimpressedbyClaire,thehouseandthedeliciouscuisine.Justbeforetheyleft,ClaireheardGladyswhisperingtoanotherwomanthatshehadneverseenanyonesohandsomeasTony.Whatasweetvictorytobeenviedbythosewomen!

Shemightnotbeasbeautifulasthem,butnoneofthemhadsuchahandsomelover.

Thensheremembered-Tonywasjustamachine.Sheshouted"Leavemealone"andrantoherbed.Shecriedallnight.ThenextmorningacardroveupandtookTonyaway.

ThecompanywasverypleasedwithTony'sreportonhisthreeweekswithClaire.Tonyhadprotectedahumanbeingfromharm.Hehad
