TodayIwanttotellyouthreestoriesfrommylife.That'sit.Nobigdeal.Justthreestories.Thefirststoryisaboutconnectingthedots.

IdroppedoutofReedCollegeafterthefirstsixmonthsbutthenstayedaroundasadrop-inforanothereighteenmonthsorsobeforeIreallyquit.SowhydidIdropout?

ItstartedbeforeIwasborn.Mybiologicalmotherwasayoung,unwedgraduatestudent,andshedecidedtoputmeupforadoption.ShefeltverystronglythatIshouldbeadoptedbycollegegraduates,soeverythingwasallsetformetobeadoptedatbirthbyalawyerandhiswife,exceptthatwhenIpoppedout,theydecidedatthelastminutethattheyreallywantedagirl.Somyparents,whowereonawaitinglist,gotacallinthemiddleofthenightasking,"We'vegotanunexpectedbabyboy.Doyouwanthim?

"Theysaid,"Ofcourse."Mybiologicalmotherfoundoutlaterthatmymotherhadnevergraduatedfromcollegeandthatmyfatherhadnevergraduatedfromhighschool.Sherefusedtosignthefinaladoptionpapers.SheonlyrelentedafewmonthslaterwhenmyparentspromisedthatIwouldgotocollege.

Thiswasthestartinmylife.Andseventeenyearslater,Ididgotocollege,butInaïvelychoseacollegethatwasalmostasexpensiveasStanford,andallofmyworking-classparents'savingswerebeingspentonmycollegetuition.Aftersixmonths,Icouldn'tseethevalueinit.IhadnoideawhatIwantedtodowithmylife,andnoideaofhowcollegewasgoingtohelpmefigureitout,andhereIwas,spendingallthemoneymyparentshadsavedtheirentirelife.SoIdecidedtodropoutandtrustthatitwouldallworkoutOK.Itwasprettyscaryatthetime,butlookingback,itwasoneofthebestdecisionsIevermade.TheminuteIdroppedout,Icouldstoptakingtherequiredclassesthatdidn'tinterestmeandbegindroppinginontheonesthatlookedfarmoreinteresting.

Itwasn'tallromantic.Ididn'thaveadormroom,soIsleptonthefloorinfriends'rooms.IreturnedCokebottlesforthefive-centdepositstobuyfoodwith,andIwouldwalkthesevenmilesacrosstowneverySundaynighttogetonegoodmealaweekattheHareKrishnatemple.Ilovedit.AndmuchofwhatIstumbledintobyfollowingmycuriosityandintuitionturnedouttobepricelesslateron.Letmegiveyouoneexample.

ReedCollegeatthattimeofferedperhapsthebestcalligraphyinstructioninthecountry.Throughoutthecampuseveryposter,everylabeloneverydrawerwasbeautifullyhand-calligraphed.BecauseIhaddroppedoutanddidn'thavetotakethenormalclasses,Idecidedtotakeacalligraphyclasstolearnhowtodothis.Ilearnedaboutserifandsans-seriftypefaces,aboutvaryingtheamountofspacebetweendifferentlettercombinations,aboutwhatmakesgreattypographygreat.Itwasbeautiful,historical,artisticallysubtleinawaythatsciencecan'tcapture,andIfounditfascinating.

Noneofthishadevenahopeofanypracticalapplicationinmylife.ButtenyearslaterwhenweweredesigningthefirstMacintoshcomputer,itallcamebacktome,andwedesigneditallintotheMac.Itwasthefirstcomputerwithbeautifultypography.IfIhadneverdroppedinonthatsinglecourseincollege,theMacwouldhaveneverhadmultipletypefacesorproportionallyspacedfonts,andsinceWindowsjustcopiedtheMac,it'slikelythatnopersonalcomputerwouldhavethem.

IfIhadneverdroppedout,Iwouldhaveneverdroppedinonthatcalligraphyclassandpersonalscomputersmightnothavethewonderfultypographythattheydo.

OfcourseitwasimpossibletoconnectthedotslookingforwardwhenIwasincollege,butitwasvery,veryclearlookingbackwards10yearslater.Again,youcan'tconnectthedotslookingforward.Youcanonlyconnectthemlookingbackwards,soyouhavetotrustthatthedotswillsomehowconnectinyourfuture.Youhavetotrustinsomething--yourgut,destiny,life,karma,whatever--becausebelievingthatthedotswillconnectdowntheroadwillgiveyoutheconfidencetofollowyourheart,evenwhenitleadsyouoffthewell-wornpath,andthatwillmakeallthedifference.

Mysecondstoryisaboutloveandloss.Iwaslucky.IfoundwhatIlovedtodoearlyinlife.WozandIstartedAppleinmyparents'garagewhenIwastwenty.Weworkedhardandintenyears,Applehadgrownfromjustthetwoofusinagarageintoa$2billioncompanywithover4,000employees.We'djustreleasedourfinestcreation,theMacintosh,ayearearlier,andI'djustturnedthirty,andthenIgotfired.Howcanyougetfiredfromacompanyyoustarted?

Well,asApplegrew,wehiredsomeonewhoIthoughtwasverytalentedtorunthecompanywithme,andforthefirstyearorso,thingswentwell.Butthenourvisionsofthefuturebegantodiverge,andeventuallywehadafallingout.Whenwedid,ourboardofdirectorssidedwithhim,andsoatthirty,Iwasout,andverypubliclyout.Whathadbeenthefocusofmyentireadultlifewasgone,anditwasdevastating.Ireallydidn'tknowwhattodoforafewmonths.IfeltthatIhadletthepreviousgenerationofentrepreneursdown,thatIhaddroppedthebatonasitwasbeingpassedtome.ImetwithDavidPackardandBobNoyceandtriedtoapologizeforscrewingupsobadly.IwasaverypublicfailureandIeventhoughtaboutrunningawayfromtheValley.Butsomethingslowlybegantodawnonme.IstilllovedwhatIdid.TheturnofeventsatApplehadnotchangedthatonebit.I'dbeenrejectedbutIwasstillinlove.AndsoIdecidedtostartover.

Ididn'tseeitthen,butitturnedoutthatgettingfiredfromApplewasthebestthingthatcouldhaveeverhappenedtome.Theheavinessofbeingsuccessfulwasreplacedbythelightnessofbeingabeginneragain,lesssureabouteverything.Itfreedmetoenteroneofthemostcreativeperiodsinmylife.DuringthenextfiveyearsIstartedacompanynamedNeXT,anothercompanynamedPixarandfellinlovewithanamazingwomanwhowouldbecomemywife.Pixarwentontocreatetheworld'sfirstcomputer-animatedfeaturefilm,"ToyStory,"andisnowthemostsuccessfulanimationstudiointheworld.

Inaremarkableturnofevents,AppleboughtNeXTandIreturnedtoAppleandthetechnologywedevelopedatNeXTisattheheartofApple'scurrentrenaissance,andLoreneandIhaveawonderfulfamilytogether.

I'mprettysurenoneofthiswouldhavehappenedifIhadn'tbeenfiredfromApple.Itwasawful-tastingmedicinebutIguessthepatientneededit.Sometimeslife'sgoingtohityouintheheadwithabrick.Don'tlosefaith.I'mconvincedthattheonlythingthatkeptmegoingwasthatIlovedwhatIdid.You'vegottofindwhatyoulove,andthatisastrueforworkasitisforyourlovers.Yourworkisgoingtofillalargepartofyourlife,andtheonlywaytobetrulysatisfiedistodowhatyoubelieveisgreatwork,andtheonlywaytodogreatworkistolovewhatyoudo.Ifyouhaven'tfoundityet,keeplooking,anddon'tsettle.Aswithallmattersoftheheart,you'llknowwhenyoufindit,andlikeanygreatrelationshipitjustgetsbetterandbetterastheyearsrollon.Sokeeplooking.Don'tsettle.

Mythirdstoryisaboutdeath.WhenIwas17Ireadaquotethatwentsomethinglike"Ifyouliveeachdayasifitwasyourlast,somedayyou'llmostcertainlyberight."Itmadeanimpressiononme,andsincethen,forthepast33years,Ihavelookedinthemirroreverymorningandaskedmyself,"Iftodaywerethelastdayofmylife,wouldIwanttodowhatIamabouttodotoday?

"Andwhenevertheanswerhasbeen"no"fortoomanydaysinarow,IknowIneedtochangesomething.RememberingthatI'llbedeadsoonisthemostimportantthingI'veeverencounteredtohelpmemakethebigchoicesinlife,becausealmosteverything--allexternalexpectations,allpride,allfearofembarrassmentorfailure--thesethingsjustfallawayinthefaceofdeath,leavingonlywhatistrulyimportant.RememberingthatyouaregoingtodieisthebestwayIknowtoavoidthetrapofthinkingyouhavesomethingtolose.Youarealreadynaked.Thereisnoreasonnottofollowyourheart.

Aboutayearago,Iwasdiagnosedwithcancer.Ihadascanat7:

30inthemorninganditclearlyshowedatumoronmypancreas.Ididn'tevenknowwhatapancreaswas.Thedoctorstoldmethiswasalmostcertainlyatypeofcancerthatisincurable,andthatIshouldexpecttolivenolongerthanthreetosixmonths.Mydoctoradvisedmetogohomeandgetmyaffairsinorder,whichisdoctors'codefor"preparetodie."Itmeanstotryandtellyourkidseverythingyouthoughtyou'dhavethenexttenyearstotellthem,injustafewmonths.Itmeanstomakesurethateverythingisbuttonedupsothatitwillbeaseasyaspossibleforyourfamily.Itmeanstosayyourgoodbyes.

Ilivedwiththatdiagnosisallday.LaterthateveningIhadabiopsywheretheystuckanendoscopedownmythroat,throughmystomachintomyintestines,putaneedleintomypancreasandgotafewcellsfromthetumor.Iwassedatedbutmywife,whowasthere,toldmethatwhentheyviewedthecellsunderamicroscope,thedoctorstartedcrying,becauseitturnedouttobeaveryrareformofpancreaticcancerthatiscurablewithsurgery.Ihadthesurgeryand,thankfully,Iamfinenow.

ThiswastheclosestI'vebeentofacingdeath,andIhopeit'stheclosestIgetforafewmoredecades.Havinglivedthroughit,Icannowsaythistoyouwithabitmorecertaintythanwhendeathwasausefulbutpurelyin
