OnJuly20,1969,AmericansNeilArmstrongandEdwin“Buzz”Aldrinbecamethefirsthumanstosetfootonthemoon.ItwasanimportantmomentinAmericanhistory.MoreUSmissionstothemoonfollowed.Now,twocongresswomenwanttoprotectthelunarlandingsitesbygrantingthemthesameprotectiongiventonationalhistoricalparks.OnJuly8,abillcalledtheApolloLunarLandingLegacyActwasintroduced,whichwouldsetupanationalparkonthemoon.

ThepurposeoftheactistoprotectthesitesforscientificresearchandtoimprovepublicunderstandingoftheApolloprogram.Apolloist

SomecriticssaythatthebilldoesnotrequireimmediateattentionbecauseNASAdoesnothaveplanstoreturntothemoon.CountrieslikeChinaandJapanhaveonlypredictedaboutsendingpeopletherearound2025,butnooneknowswhetherthatwillhappen.Othercriticsquestionwhetherthebillcanbecarriedoutandsaythatitmayevenbreakaninternationaltreaty.In1967,theUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnionagreedthatnocountrycouldmakeaclaimonthemoon.
