“Youknow,wehavepopulationsofpeoplewholackbasicswimskills,”saysJulieGilchrist.“Inswimmingpools...presumably,youknowwherethebottomis,youknowwherethesidesare,”shesays.“Andsoonewouldthinkthatwithbasicswimskillsitshouldbedifficultforanolderchildorteentodrowninaswimmingpool.Andyetthat’swhatwewereseeingamongAfricanAmericans.”
