Braveheartisthepartlyhistorical,partlymythologicalstoryofWilliamWallace,aScottishcommonmanwhofightsforhiscountry'sfreedomfromEnglishruleataroundtheendofthe13thcentury.
WilliamWallaceisaScottishrebelwholeadsanuprisingagainstthecruelEnglishrulerEdwardtheLongshanks,whowishestoinheritthecrownofScotlandforhimself.Whenhewasayoungboy,WilliamWallace'sfatherandbrother,alongwithmanyothers,losttheirlivestryingtofreeScotland.Oncehelosesanotherofhislovedones,WilliamWallacebeginshislongquesttomakeScotlandfreeonceandforall,alongwiththeassistanceofRoberttheBruce.
ThemoviebeginsinthesmalltownofElderslie,Scotland.Williamliveswithhisfather,MalcolmandelderbrotherJohn.William'sfatherandbrotherarecalledtoameetingafewmilesfromtheirhomewheretheyfindtheentirenobilityofScotlandhanging.MalcolmandJohnthengotoabattlebetweentheEnglishandtheirclan,bothdietragically.AtthefuneralWilliammeetshisuncleArgylewhofoughtinthebattlewithMalcolmandhisfather.Hetakeshimawaytolivewithhim.ThescenethencutstoanadultWilliamonhishorse.WilliamlaterrunsintoagirlheknewbeforehewenttolivewithArgyle,hername,Murron,wediscoverthatLordshavetherighttosleepwithbridesontheirweddingnight,soWilliammarriesMurroninsecret.MurronisthenassaultedbyaEnglishguard,theguardiskilledbyWilliam,afightensues,andeventuallyMurroniskilledbythelord.ThisenragesWallacewhothenbuildshimselfafinearmyenteringthecityandkillingallEnglishmanwithin.WallacepreparestomoveontoStirlingwherehepreparedforhisgreatestbattleyet,intheforestherealizesthathemustfindawaytobeattheheavycavalryfromtheground,andhedecidedstocreatespearstwiceaslongasmen.Thesewereusedinthebattletokilltheentireheavycavalryraisedatthelastminutetokilltheoncominghorses.EventuallyWallacereachesYork,themostimportantmilitarycityhegainscontrol.William’sfinalbattleatFalkirkendsinhisbetrayalbytwonobles,whomhelaterkills.WilliamisbetrayedbytheleperfatherofRoberttheBruce,theniscapturedandrefusestobowdownasaloyalsubjectofthekingEdwardI,Longshanks.Therefore,insteadofmerebeheadingWilliamWallaceissubjecttobeingHung,hungwithinaninchofdeath.Drawn,beingstretchedbyhisanklesandwristsandthenhavinghisinsidesshowntohimbeforehedied.ThenQuartered,hewasbeheadedandhisheadwasputontheLondonBridge,hisbodywastorninto4piecesonesenttoeachcornerofBritainasawarningtothecitizens.
