In1252theionswerejoinedbyawhitebearprobablyapolarbear---givenbytheKingofNorway.In1255,theKingofFrancesentthefirstelephanteverseeninEnglandandpeopleflockedtogethertoseethenovelsight.Sadly,theelephantdiedtwoyearslater.

Poortreatmentandcrampedconditionsmeantmanyoftheanimalsdidnotsurviveforlong.ButtheMenageriecontinuedtogrow.EdwardIcreatedapermanentnewhomefortheMenagerieatthewesternentrancetotheTowerinwhatbecameknownastheLionTower.Theterrifyingsoundsandsmellsofwildanimalsmusthavebothimpressedandscaredvisitors.

By1622,thecollectionhadbeenextendedtoincludethreeeagles,twopumas,atigerandajackal,aswellaslionsandleopards,whowerethemainattractions.

However,theendoftheMenageriecameinthe1830s.Campaignershadbeguntoraiseconcerns,andtheanimalswereexpensive,occasionallydangerousandanuisancetotheguardsmen.TheDukeofWellingtonsent150ofthebeaststoanewzooinRegent'sPark,today'sLondonZoo.

DespiteAlfredCops'sbesteffortstocarryon,severalfurtherincidentsincludinganescapedwolfandamonkeythatbitaguardsman'slegconvincedKingWilliamIVtoshutdowntheMenagerieforgoodin1835.TheremaininganimalsweresoldtozoosandtravellingshowsandtheLionTowerwaslaterdemolished.
