RalphNader

RalphNaderisamanoffewpossessions.Heownsverylittleandlivesinasmallapartment.Hedoesn'thaveacaroraTVset.Hedoesn'thavemanyclothesandhedoesn'tcareaboutmoneywhenhemakesalotofmoney,hegivesitaway.Hedoesn'tsmokeandheworksfromsixinthemorninguntillateatnight,sevendaysaweek:

heispayingbacktoAmericahisdebtasacitizen.

Whenhewenttopartiesasayoungman,peoplecomplainedthatallhetalkedaboutwasthedangersofcars,andhowbadcardesigncausedthedeathsofsomanypeopleeachyear.AfterhegraduatedfromHarvard,hepublishedanarticleentitled"UnsafeatAnySpeed,"whichwasaboutacarcalledCorvair.Later,hemadeabigattackonthecarindustryandshowedhowmanydeathsincaraccidentswerebecauseofbadly-madecars.Hesaidnewlawswereneededtomakecarssafer.In1966,becauseofNader'swork,alawwaspassedtomakecarsafer.

Afterthissuccess,Naderbecameinterestedinsomethingverydifferent.Thiswasthequalityofmeatandtheamountofmeatthatisputintofoodslikesausagesandhamburgers.Ayearlater,in1967,againbecauseofNader'swork,alawwaspassedtoensurethatproductslikesausagesandhamburgerscontainedtherightamountofmeat.In1968,threemorelawswerepassedbecauseofNader'sefforts.Thefirstwastoensurethesafetyofgaspipelines--thesearethepipesthattakegasacrossthecountryfromonetowntoanother.Thesecondwastoprotectpeoplefromradiation--thatis,thedangerousradiationwhichmayleakfromnuclearsources.Thethirdwastoensuretheproperstandardofpoultry--thatis,thechickenandturkeymeat.

RalphNader,nowoneofthemostinfluentialpeopleintheUnitedStates,hassetawonderfulexampleofwhatdeterminedmenandwomencandotoimprovethequalityoflifeintheircountry.
